1. Impact of Shift Work on Sleep Quality and Cognitive Function Among Nurses
a. K McDowall, E Murphy, K Anderson (2017, November). The impact of shift
work on sleep quality among nurses, Occupational Medicine, Volume 67,
Issue 8, Pages 621–625, https://doi.org/10.1093/occmed/kqx152

Work Performance Among Shift Work Critical Care Nurses: A Cross-Sectional
Study, Bahrain Medical Bulletin, Volume 44, Issue 4.

c. Esmaily, A., Jambarsang, S., Mohammadian, F., & Mehrparvar, A. H. (2021).
Effect of shift work on working memory, attention and response time in
nurses. International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics, 28(2),
1085–1090. https://doi.org/10.1080/10803548.2020.1863656

Research gaps:
The studies do not adequately compare different shift types, which is
important as rotating shifts (morning, afternoon, and night) might have
different effects on work performance. Also, cognitive effects of shift work may
vary by age and gender, but these variations are not fully addressed. Lastly, it
does not sufficiently explore how workload variations, such as the number of
patients or the complexity of care, influence work performance among
shift-working nurses.

2. Experiences of Newly Graduated Nurses Transitioning to Clinical Practice

practice: Perspectives of new nursing graduates of Nepal. BMC Nursing.

Research gaps:
The studies were not able to consider how resource scarcity—such as
limited medical supplies, inadequate staffing, and poor infrastructure—affects
the transition experiences of new nurses and their adaptation strategies in
low-resource settings. Interprofessional relationships (e.g., with doctors, allied
health professionals) were also overlooked. Different nursing specialties (e.g.,
critical care, pediatrics, community health) may also contribute to the
transition experiences of new nurses.

Research gaps:
Specialized care areas, such as critical care, pediatrics, or mental
health wards may affect nurse staffing levels. Use of technology might help
address or mitigate the challenges posed by nurse shortages.
