2 Way Slab Design
2 Way Slab Design
When a floor panel is square or nearly square and have beams or walls on four sides, it
is more, economical and safe to use two sets of reinforcing bars placed at right angles or
perpendicular to each other. The bars in two direction transfer the loads to the four
supporting beams. This is called a two-way slab or slabs supported on four sides.
Assumptions for two-way slab
𝐿 𝑆
1) If 𝑆 < 2 or > 0.5
𝐿
2) Minimum thickness
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟
t=
180
4) Spacing of bars within the column strip is 3/2 the spacing at the center
𝑆
5) Compute for m =
𝐿
6) M = Cws2 c = moment coefficient
Sample Problem:
A pit walled with concrete is rectangular in shape. A reinforced concrete slab is to be
designed to frame on top of four walls. The center-to-center distance between wall
bearings is 5.4 meters for the short span and 9 meters for the long span. Using fc’=20MPa
fs = 124 MPa, n = 10 and live load = 15 kN/m2. Determine:
1.) Required effective depth
2.) Moments along the short and long span
3.) Steel requirements along the short and long span
Use 20mm reinforcing bars weight of concrete = 2400 kg/m3
𝑆 5.4
m= = m = 0.60
𝐿 9
Solution:
1.) Required effective depth
a.) Minimum thickness of slab
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 (2)(5.4+9)(1000)
t= t= t = 160 mm
180 180
𝑀 43.86 (1000)2
d=√ =√ = 164 mm
𝑅𝑏 (1.63)(1000)
total D = 164 + 25 (cover) = 189mm say use 200 mm
d = 200 – 25
d = 175 mm
since required “d” (175) is greater than the assumed d = 160, recompute the
dead load and moment
dead load = (0.20) (1) (2.4) (9.81)
dead load = 4.71 kN/m
total load = 15 + 4.71 = 19.71 kN/m
2) Moments:
a) Along short span:
+M = cws2 = (0.08) (19.71) (5.4)2 -M = cws2 = (0.053) (19.71) (5.4)2
+ M = 45.98 kN-m -M = 30.46 kN-m
𝑀 45.98 (1000)2
d=√ d=√ = 167.9 mm <175 mm
𝑅𝑏 (1.63)(1000)
use d = 175 mm ok
