Instructions:
• This paper contains Two questions in Six (6) pages. Answer all questions.
• Show all your workings and state any assumptions you required.
• All symbols are in standard notation.

1. Let f (z) = eiz for z ∈ C. Let l and c be two paths from z1 = −2 + i to z2 = 2 + i where
l be parallel to x-axis and c be along the upper half circle |z − i| = 2.
Use above details to answer to following questions.

(a) parameterize the path l. (marks 6)

Answer: z(t) = (−2 + i)(1 − t) + (2 + i)t = −2 + 4t + i for 0 ≤ t ≤ 1.
(b) Evaluate l f (z)dz. (marks 12)

c
f (z)dz.
Answer: Since f is analytic on C, z1 f (z)dz path independent.
R z2

Therefore c f (z)dz = l f (z)dz = −i[e−1+2i − e−1−2i ].

R R

(d) Evaluate l∪−c f (z)dz. (marks 5)

R

Answer: l∪−c f (z)dz = 0 since l ∪ −c is a closed boundary and f is analytic.

(e) Does g(z) = analytic on C(no need to prove your answer)? If not what are
(z 2 + 4)
the singular point of g on C? (marks 6)
Answer: No. z0 = ±2i are singular points of g.

2. Let S = ~u1 = (1, 0, 0)T , ~u2 = (1, 1, 0)T , ~u3 = (0, −2, 1)T . Let T : R3 → R3 be

a linear transformation such that T (~u1 ) = (1, 0, −1)T , T (~u2 ) = (0, 1, 0)T , T (~u3 ) =
(2, −1, 0)T . And ~v = (x, y, z)T be any vector from R3 .
Use above details to answer to following questions.

(a) Is the set S linearly independent? Justify your Answer. (marks 8)

Answer: Yes.
Let c1 , c2 , c3 ∈ R. Then

c1 u1 + c2 u2 + c2 u3 = 0 =⇒ (c1 + c2 , c2 − 2c3 , c3 )T = (0, 0, 0)T

=⇒ c3 = 0 =⇒ c1 = c2 = c3 = 0.

(b) Express the vector ~v as a linear combination of vectors in S.

(marks 10)
Answer: v = (x − y − 2z)u1 + (y + 2z)u2 + zu3 .
(c) Find T (~v ). (marks 8)
Answer:

T (v) = T ((x − y − 2z)u1 + (y + 2z)u2 + zu3 )

= (x − y − 2z)T (u1 ) + (y + 2z)T (u2 ) + zT (u3 )
= (x − y, y + z, −x + y + 2z).
