Research Report on Business Intelligence in

Healthcare

Introduction
Business intelligence has taken on a very crucial aspect in healthcare
management and allows organizations to use information for better decision-
making, greater operational efficiency, and enhanced patient results. This
paper discusses the research article "Business Intelligence and Big Data
Analytics in Healthcare: A Systematic Review" published by Health Informatics
Journal (DOI: 10.1177/1460458217742970). The study gives a systematic
coverage of BI in the general application and the role of big data analytics in
the health sector.

Rationale for Selection

This paper was selected based on the systematic review approach,

amalgamating results from different studies into an overall view of BI in
healthcare. It is of interest to me to understand the transformative changes
data analytics could bring about in the delivery of healthcare. In this regard,
this paper touches on all the key issues regarding BI, hence a valuable source
for both practitioners and researchers.

Problem Statement

Where as BI and big data analytics could revolutionize healthcare; however,

there are multiple challenges to effective implementation of these.

Data Fragmentation: The fragmentation of health care data across various

systems leads to lack of smooth access and transparency in the data and also
inefficiencies in retrieving the data for further analysis.
Barriers in Integrating: It is technically complex and expensive to bring
together data coming from disparate sources.
User Resistance: There is resistance towards the adoption of BI tools by
healthcare professionals because they are not prepared or resistant to change.

The following are some of the challenges that need to be addressed to

maximize the benefits of BI in the health service .

Methods Employed in the Study

The authors systematically reviewed based on the following methodology:

1. Data Sources: The study incorporated studies indexed by Scopus, PubMed,

and IEEE Xplore databases.
Inclusion criteria: Include peer-reviewed articles from between 2010 and 2017
that relate to applications of BI or the use of big data analytics in healthcare.
3. Data Extraction and Analysis: From the data extracted by the authors for
application areas, technologies in use, benefits, and challenges experienced.
This structured approach thus helped to achieve comprehensive synthesis of
the literature, drawing valuable information into the state of BI in health care.

Literature Review

Applications of BI in Healthcare

Clinical Decision Support: BI tools are used to analyze the data regarding
patient and provide decision-making capabilities to the clinicians (Agarwal et
al., 2016).

Operational Efficiency: BI assists organizations in allocating resources and

optimizing workflow. In such a case, costs diminish (Wixom & Watson, 2010).

Predictive Analytics: Predictive models enable physicians to predict the

outcome of a patient and the rate at which the patient would be readmitted,
thus being proactive in some interventions (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2014).

Challenges of BI Implementation

Issues related to data quality: A lot of inconsistency in the quality of data can
diminish the quality of BI insights (Boulton et al., 2016).

Change Management: This change management technique may face obstacles

in terms of the implementation process of BI tools because of staff resistance
(Bohorquez et al., 2018).

Privacy Concerns: The management of sensitive information of patients calls

for ethical and regulatory concerns (López et al., 2017).

Key Findings

Some of the key findings of the study are as follows:,

Diverse Applications: The study diversified the use of BI into various kinds of
applications, namely, clinical, operational, and financial domains.

Technology: Combining Big Data Analytics with Traditional BI Tools Combining

big data analytics with traditional BI tools is what increases the scope of
analysis with these tools.

Future Directions: The future directions indicate that the authors wish that
data governance and a well-designed user training program would be
highlighted for overcoming the hurdles of implementation.

Critical Analysis

Strengths of the Paper

1. Wide Scope: The systematic review integrates a much wider scope of

literature that gives immense understanding regarding the healthcare BI
applications.

2 Action Recommendations: Identifying the source of challenges and possible

solutions provide useful insights for health care organizations.

Areas for Improvement

1. Thin Empirical Data: The paper is largely an aggregate of qualitative findings,

and for stronger conclusions the case may be supplemented with quantitative
data.

2. Real Cases: More real case studies of BI successfully implemented with

descriptions will be helpful in terms of providing guidance to the practitioner in
the practical arena.

Proposed Enhancements

What the Future Holds: An Improved Research

In a future research, to improve on the findings of this study, the following

might be considered:

Advanced Technologies Integration: How AI and machine learning can make it

possible to upgrade the capabilities of predictive analytics.

Focus on Change Management Strategies: Effective training and change

management framework for the users on BI tools.

Conclusion

The selected paper provides a most valuable contribution to the understanding

of business intelligence and big data analytics in the healthcare industry.
Synthesizing a wide range of studies, the authors provide actionable insights
and highlight important challenges that need to be addressed. Future research
should focus on empirical studies and case examples together with the
integration of advanced technologies and change management strategies to
increase the efficiency of BI in the healthcare industry.
