TRANSCRIPT OF ORAL ARGUMENTS FOR FIM 2024

The Communication Courtmaster calls you inside…

1. “The counsel seeks permission to approach the Dias/Bench.”

Much obliged

(Try to always say this when court allows you for something over a permission).

2. “Good Morning/Afternoon to the Hon’ble Bench.” (Optional)

3. “If it may please the Court, the counsel seeks permission to address the bench as your
Lordships/ Ladyships/ Your Honours.”

Use ‘the Hon’ble Bench’ when you want to address the bench as whole upon an answer.

“Much obliged your Lordship”

4. “Lordships/ Your Honours, this is the counsel appearing on behalf of the Plaintiff/ Defendant
before the Hon’ble Court in the matter of X vs Y.”

5. “If your Lordships are satisfied with the statement of Jurisdiction, the counsel seeks
permission to briefly discuss the facts/ factual matrix of the case.”

Discuss the jurisdiction if the Judge asks you to.


6. “Your Lordships, there are three main issues involved in the present case.”

List them.

7. “With Your Lordships'/Ladyships'/the bench'/ court' permission, the counsel would like to
move on with the arguments advanced/ pleadings/ arguments.”

Much Obliged.

8. “Your Lordship, the first issue is X, which the counsel would be establishing Y number of
grounds.”

Proceed with the issue.

9. “If your lordships are satisfied with the pleading or arguments submitted in the 1st issue, the
counsel seeks permission to begin with the pleadings or arguments for the 2nd issue.”

Carry on this way until you have exhausted your issues.

10. “If the bench is satisfied with the pleadings/ arguments, the counsel seeks permission to
begin with the Prayer/ read the prayer.”

11. “Thank you Your Lordships. It was pleasure arguing before the court.”

12. “Unless the Court has any further questions, that concludes my submission on behalf of the
Plaintiff / Defendant.”

Bow Down and exit the Courtroom.


Miscellaneous

13. Pleading Ignorance- Last resort when you do not know the answer to a question.

“Your Lordships/Ladyship, counsel is not privy to that information at this time.”

Try to never plead ignorance of law.

17. Answering a question -

“Thank you for the question your Lordships/ The counsel humbly submits that/ Much obliged
for the question, your Lordships”

Answer it.

Disclaimer: This is just a rough transcript as to the language and the phrases
that are to be used inside the courtrooms. While it is not advised to memorise
these phrases and sentences, using these or phrases similar to these will
certainly enhance the structure and effectiveness of your oral presentation
in the moot.
