C. Lesson Proper

Meaning and Importance of Non-verbal communication

is the transfer of information between two or more people,
intentionally or unintentionally, without the use of speech in writing.
All kinds of human responses that are not expressed in words are
classified as non-verbal communication– smiles, tone, movement,
manners of walking, standing, and sitting, appearance, style of
attire, attitude towards punctuality and space, and personality.
Calero (2005), in his book The Power of Nonverbal Communication,
gave the following reasons why mastery of non-verbal
communication is important:
a. It enhances and emphasizes the message of your speech.
b. It can communicate all feelings, attitudes, and perceptions as
well as express anything without saying a word.
c. It can sustain attention of listeners and keep them engaged in
the speech.
d. It makes you more dynamic and animated in your delivery.
e. It can build connections with listeners.
f. It makes you credible as a speaker.
g. It serves as a channel to release tensions and nervousness.

Aspects of Non-verbal communication

Non-verbal communication occurs without using any oral or written
word. Instead of written or oral words, it relies on various non-
verbal cues like physical movements, tasks, colors, signs, symbols,
signals charts, etc. to express feelings, attitudes, or information.
Although no word is used in non-verbal communication, it can
effectively communicate many human feelings more accurately
than verbal methods of communication.

Eight types of non-verbal communication

Scholars have identified eight types of non-verbal communication:
a. Facial Expression - includes the eye, brow, and mouth
movements that people use as non-verbal cues. For example,
frowning, furrowing one’s brow, and rolling one’s eyes are all
examples of facial expressions that convey meaning.
b. Eye contact - is the use of gaze, looking into someone’s eyes, to
communicate.
c. Kinesics (Body Movement) - includes non-verbal cues such as
postures and gestures. For example, slouched shoulders tend to
communicate tiredness.
d. Haptics (Touch) - includes non-verbal cues such as hugging,
shaking hands, and touching parts of the other person’s body like
the shoulder or arm.
e. Proxemics (Space) - describes the perception and use of space to
communicate meaning and relational status. For example, standing
close to someone while talking to them communicates intimacy.
f. Paralinguistics- describes the vocal qualities such as rate, pitch,
volume, tone, and tempo that people use as nonverbal cues.
g. Physical appearance - involve the use of grooming, clothes, and
other objects to communicate messages about oneself.
h. Chronemics (Time) - describes the use of time as a nonverbal
cue. For example, the amount of time that it takes to respond to an
email or text message is a nonverbal cue that tells the recipient
how to interpret the message.

Non-verbal communication is linked to culture.

It has been well-documented that culture and communication are
intimately linked. The same goes for non-verbal communication –
it’s joined to culture at the hip. While there are general similarities
between non-verbal cues used all over the world, you cannot just
assume that the same non-verbal cues that you use in your culture
can be used in another. For instance, in the United States, it is
normal to smile at a stranger – that is seen as a warm and
welcoming sign. will not view it the same way. There, you can even
come across as impolite if you smile for a stranger. Fly on over to
Asia and a smile can have a different meaning depending on the
context. In some Asian\\ cultures, a smile can imply that you are
embarrassed and not happy. The moral of this is that as a
businessperson, understanding your audience is key to nailing both
verbal and non-verbal communication.

D. Application:
Activity 1: We Have to Move Now!
Directions: The teacher will divide the class into four groups.
Each group will be given the same script (short line from a film)
that contain verbal and non-verbal. The students will be given 3
minutes to practice and prepare. It is up to the group leaders
how they will divide the tasks. As long as all members will
participate. This activity will help the students to understand
and properly use non-verbal cues in communication.
Rubric
The teacher will use this rubric to grade each group for their
role play.

E. Assessment: PERFORMANCE-BASED
Task: TV Show Analysis
Directions: The teacher will let the students watch a TV show
(variety show). Then, she will let the students choose one of
their favorite toasts and analyze the speaker’s use of non-verbal
cues. They will write their answer on a sheet of paper. The
students shall use the following guide for their analysis:

1. Why did you choose that TV host? How does he/she perform
as a host?
2. What were the non-verbal symbols that he/she used that you
consider exemplary? Explain your answer?
3. How does he/she convey his/her ideas? Does he/she speak
clearly?
4. What are your overall impressions of his/her as a host?
