Worksheet 2024-2025

Name: Topic: Nutrition in Plants

Class: VII Subject: Science
Prepared by: Tr. Rajkumari Agarwal Date:

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to:
 Differentiate between autotrophic and heterotrophic modes of nutrition.
 Describe the process of photosynthesis in plants.
 Demonstrate the importance of different components of photosynthesis.
 Explain how soil nutrients can be replenished.

I. Choose the correct answer.

1) Which of the following is a nutrient?

(a) Fats (b) Vitamins (c) Proteins (d) All of these

2) The process by which green plants prepare their own food in the presence of sunlight
is called_________________
(a) saprophytic nutrition (b) photosynthesis
(c) cellular nutrition (d) nutrition

3) Which of the following statements is/are correct?

(i) All green plants can prepare their own food. (ii) Most animals are autotrophs.
(iii) Carbon dioxide is not required for photosynthesis.
(iv) Oxygen is liberated during photosynthesis.

Choose the correct answer from the options below:

(a) (i) and (iv)
(b) only (ii)
(c) (ii) and (iii)
(d) (i) and (ii)

4) The raw material used by plants during photosynthesis

(a) N2 and O2 (b) O2, H2 and CO2 (c) CO2 and water
(d) water and minerals.

II. Answer the following:

1) What is parasitic nutrition? Give an example of partial parasitic plant.
Ans: Parasitic mode of nutrition is where an organism (parasite) lives on the body surface or
inside the body of another type of organism (host). The parasite obtains nutrition directly
from the body of the host and in turn harm the host. Mistletoe is an example of partial
parasitic plant.

2) Write the word equation for photosynthesis?

Ans: The word equation for the process of photosynthesis is:
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen + Water

3) Distinguish between autotrophs and heterotrophs?

Ans: Autotrophs are producers who prepare their own food. Heterotrophs are consumers who
depend on other sources for their food.

4) Give an example of saprophyte.

Ans: Fungi is an example of saprophyte.

5) Do leaves that do not appear green have chlorophyll?

Ans: The primary pigment that absorbs light during photosynthesis and gives plants their
characteristic green colour is called chlorophyll. In addition to chlorophyll, plants also
contain other pigments, such as xanthophylls, carotenoids, anthocyanins etc., These pigments
give plant components their distinctive colour. Chlorophyll is present in small amounts, and
other pigments cover the green of chlorophyll so that they do not appear green yet carry out
photosynthesis.

III. Observe the steps in the experiment and answer the following questions.

Q1. Explain the role of ethanol/alcohol in the experiment.

Ans: Boiling ethanol helps dissolve the chlorophyll and thus turns the leaf white.

Q2. Explain the role of boiling water in this experiment.

Ans: Boiling water helps to kill the cells present in the leaves.
Q3. What is the result of the experiment and why?
Ans: Blue - black colouration of the leaf shows the presence of starch in it.

Q4. If the leaf has yellow patches due to absence of chlorophyll, what would be the
result?
Ans: Only those parts of the leaf that are green in colour due to the presence of chlorophyll
will show the colour change.
IV. Assertion and reason question:

The question below consists of an assertion and a Reason. Use the following key to choose
the appropriate answer.
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

Q1) Assertion (A): Plants make their food themselves and are called autotrophs.
Reason (R): Human beings and other animals depend on plants for their food.
Ans: (b)
Q2) Assertion (A): Water and minerals present in soil are absorbed by roots and transported
to leaves.
Reason (R): Carbon dioxide from air is taken through stomata present on the surface of
leaves.
Ans: (b)
Q3) Assertion (A): The green pigment present in the leaves of plants is called chlorophyll.
Reason (R): This green pigment is responsible for the green colour of most of the plants.
Ans: (b)
