WORKSHEET
Module 6 – Momentum, Impulse & Collisions
Time to work it out
Answer the following questions in separate sheet/s of paper (intermediate paper).
Make sure answers are clear and readable. The document should include your name,
grade level and section as headers in your first page. Follow instructions carefully.
Submit your answer next meeting. Note that your rating for this output will be part of the
30% of your grade under individual output or class standing.
I. TRUE or FALSE. Indicate True if the statement is true
and False if otherwise. You may NO longer copy each statement. (1 point each)
1. An object moving at constant speed has momentum.
2. An object with mass will have momentum.
3. The standard unit of work, energy and momentum is joule.
4. A less massive object can have more momentum than a more massive object.
5. Momentum is a conserved quantity; the momentum of an object is never changed.
6. For two identical objects moving in opposite directions at the same speed, the
forward moving object will have greater momentum.
7. Impulse is a force of an object.
8. In a collision, a car travelling north, will experience an impulse due south.
9. Most collisions are inelastic because the collision forces cause energy of motion
to be transformed into sound, heat and light energy.
10. An object with net impulse will definitely experience change in momentum.
11. An oddly-shaped object may have more than one center of mass.
12. The center of mass of a body is determined within the body’s mass.
13. In a collision, the net impulse of an object is equal to its change in momentum.
⃗ 𝒄𝒎 is
14. If the net external force on the system is zero, the center-of-mass velocity 𝒗
maximum.
15. The geometric center of a solid spherical object (i.e. marble) is also its center of
mass.

II. PROBLEM EXERCISES
Solve only two (2) of the following problems. Show complete and clear solution.
1. A softball has mass 𝟎. 𝟐𝟐𝟎 𝒌𝒈. (a) If the velocity of a pitched ball has a magnitude of
𝟒𝟓. 𝟎 𝒎/𝒔 and the batted ball’s velocity is 𝟓𝟓. 𝟎 𝒎/𝒔 in the opposite direction, find the
magnitude of the change in momentum of the ball and of the impulse applied to it by
the bat. (b) If the ball remains in contact with the bat for 𝟓. 𝟎𝟎 𝒎𝒔, find the magnitude
of the average force applied by the bat. (5 points)
2. Two skaters collide and grab on to each other on frictionless ice. One of them, of mass
𝟕𝟎. 𝟎 𝒌𝒈, is moving to the right at 𝟐. 𝟎𝟎 𝒎/𝒔 while the other, of mass 𝟔𝟓. 𝟎 𝒌𝒈, is moving
to the left at 𝟐. 𝟓𝟎 𝒎/𝒔. What are the magnitude and direction of the velocity of these
skaters just after they collide? (5 points)
3. Three odd-shaped blocks of chocolate have the following masses and center-of-mass
coordinates: (1) 𝟎. 𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝒌𝒈, (𝟎. 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝒎, 𝟎. 𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝒎), (2) 𝟎. 𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝒌𝒈, (𝟎. 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝒎, −𝟎. 𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝒎),
(3) 𝟎. 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝒌𝒈, (−𝟎. 𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝒎, 𝟎. 𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝒎). Find the coordinates of the center of mass of the
system of three chocolate blocks. (5 points)
