Section—B
(Short Answer Type Questions)

2. Attempt all questions : 4 each

(a) Explain and prove that stored energy- “is a
property of a system”. (CO1, AN)
OR
Gasoline vapor is injected into the cylinder of an
automobile engine when the piston is in its
expanded position. The temperature, pressure,
and volume of the resulting gas-air mixture are
20°C, 1.00 bar and 240 cm³, respectively. The
mixture is then compressed adiabatically to a
volume of 40 cm³ :
(i) What are the pressure and temperature of the
mixture after the compression ?
(ii) How much work is done by the mixture
during the compression ?

(b) A heat engine having an efficiency of 35% is

used to run a refrigerator of COP of 4, what is the
heat input into the each MJ removed from the
cold body by the refrigerator ? If this system is
used as a heat pump shown in figure 1, how many
MJ of heat would be available for heating for
each MJ of heat input to the engine. (CO3, AN)

OR

State and explain Carnot theorem.

(c) Explain stress strain diagram for ductile material

in detail. (CO5, EV)

OR

List the various types of loads to which a beam

can be subjected.

(d) It is proposed to design a refrigeration plant for a

food store which is to be maintained at 5°C. The
ambient temperature is 25°C and the estimated
heat transfer from the store is the rate of 5 kW. If
the system operates on reversed Carnot heat
engine cycle, determine the performance index
and the minimum power required to operate the
refrigeration plant. (CO3, EV)
OR
Sketch the Carnot cycle on the P-V diagram, and
derive an expression for its efficiency.
(e) In an air standard diesel cycle, the compression
ratio is 18. The pressure and temperature at the
beginning of compression are 0.1 MPa and
300 K, respectively. Heat is added at constant
pressure until the temperature is increased to
1700 K. Calculate (i) cut off ratio (ii) heat
supplied per kg of air (iii) cycle efficiency.
(CO4, AN)
OR
Derive an expression for constant pressure cycle
or diesel cycle.
(f) Derive an expression for steady flow energy
equation. (CO2, AN)

temperature process.

(Long Answer Type Questions)

3. Attempt all questions : 8 each

(a) In a steam turbine unit, the mass flow rate of

stream through the turbine is 17 kg/s and the
power developed by the turbine is 14000 kW. The
specific enthalpies of the steam at inlet and exit of
the turbine are 1200 kJ/kg and 360 kJ/kg while
the velocities are 60 m/s and 150 m/s
respectively. Calculate the rate at which heat is
rejected from the turbine. Also find the area of the
inlet pipe given that the specific volume of the
steam at inlet is 0.5 m³/kg. (CO2, EV)

isothermal conditions, estimate the work done,
change in internal energy, and heat supplies or
rejected by the fluid system.
