1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Background

Gas supply from Gbaran CPF to NLNG T1-6 was significantly impacted in 2022 due to the
suspension of the injection of gross liquid (condensate and produced water) into the liquid
evacuation pipeline KCTL/TNP (operated by SPDC). The suspension was due to losses
encountered from oil theft and integrity issues from third party activities on the pipeline. The KCTL
was not available for evacuation of Gbaran CPF liquid from February through to November 2022
and It has only been available for circa 35% YTD in 2023.
The alternative condensate evacuation route available during the outages of the KCTL/TNP is to
separate the condensate from the produced water in the existing condensate tank and spike the
condensate with the processed gas from Gbaran CPF into the EGGS 2 pipeline, then enters the
EGGS 1 pipeline and arriving at the GTS 2/4 slug catcher at NLNG.
The dehydration of the condensate takes place in the condensate storage tank, where the
condensate is withdrawn from the top of the tank and the produced water from the bottom of the
tank. The produced water is currently disposed in the GBAR007 well via water injection.

1.2 Project Scope Overview
The scope overview of the selected concept for the project is the installation of two storage tanks of
175kbbls capacity each, acquisition of land in a biodiversity area and brownfield integration of the storage
tanks to the existing Gbaran CPF facility. The location of the new tanks will be in the general reserved
area, outside the current Gbaran CPF perimeter fence based on the site selection report.
The new storage tanks will be tied to the condensate stabilization unit train 2 (Oil train) to receive water
and oil, where the inlet to the tanks will be connected to the piping routed to TNP. The excess condensate
from the condensate stabilization unit train 1 (condensate train) will be routed to the train 2 via the existing
process (condensate from the existing condensate tank is routed to the train 2 with the existing
condensate return pump).
The outlet of the new storage tanks shall be routed back to the condensate stabilization unit train 2 via
new liquid return pumps for evacuation of liquid from the tanks to TNP when the pipeline becomes
available for liquid export. The scope also includes the addition of a water outlet from the tanks to the
existing produced water disposal system, to evacuate produce water from the tank for increase in
endurance time.
Other requirements and functionalities to enable optimal operation of facilities are included as part of the
scope. The description of the work scope is as follows.
1. Engineering Design for a 2 Nos. x 175kbbls fixed-cone roof hydrocarbon storage tanks.
2. Site preparation and civil foundation construction for the 2 Nos. x 175kbbls hydrocarbon storage
tank, manifolds and piping with bund walls for each of the new storage tank.
3. Engineering Design of drain systems.
4. Engineering Design and specification of 2x30kbpd capacity liquid return pumps.
5. Engineering Design and tie-in of liquid inlet piping to the new storage tanks and tie-in of liquid
outlet from the storage tanks to the inlet of the new liquid return pumps.
6. Engineering Design of tie-in of liquid out from the new liquid return pumps to the inlet of the CSU
train 2surge vessel.
7. Engineering Design of safeguarding system against overpressure and under pressure scenarios.
8. Engineering Design of Electrical power supply and related equipment related to the new facility.
9. Engineering Design and Brownfield integration of the new installations, safeguarding and control
systems, power, utilities to existing Gbaran CPF facility systems and process.
10. Engineering Design of modification of the Gbaran CPF perimeter fence to accommodate the new
acquired land for the storage tanks and bund walls installations.

1.3 Purpose of the document
The purpose of this present document is to detail the calculations of the new cathodic protection systems
to be implemented for the internal and external protection of the two (2 nos) X 175kbbls new fixed-roof
crude storage tanks at Gbaran. This document provides the design calculation of cathodic protection
system to protect the tank/vessel metallic structures to be installed at Gbaran.

The CP system will be sized in order to protect the internal surfaces exposed to produced water column

4.0 EXTERNAL PROTECTION USING ICCP

A CP system is not required for the external tank bottom; the tank bottom is not going to be on soil (which
provides an electrolyte for the CP current to flow). Cathodic protection is not required for tank
configurations where the tank foundation consists of at least 50 mm (2 in) of asphalt over an engineered
foundation or at least 100 mm (4 in) concrete underlain by an engineered pier or pilings foundation [DEP
30.10.73.10-GEN].

The two (2) tanks shall be on asphalt foundation of 50mm thick; therefore, Cathodic Protection system will
not be required for the external tank bottom protection.

7.0 Conclusions and recommendations

7.1 Conclusion

7.1.1 Impressed Current Cathodic Protection

No cathodic protection is required for the external tank bottom since the foundation of the tank shall be
asphaltic with at least 50mm thickness

7.1.2 Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection

The cathodic protection design calculations as shown in Section 7 reveal numbers of Al-Zn-In anodes that
will be adequate for the internal corrosion protection of liquid storage tanks 2A and 2B over the period of
25 years.
The analysis by mass requirement gives the highest number of anodes. Therefore, only the total mass of
the anode by mass requirements shall be presented in Section 8.1.4.

7.1.3 Quantity of Al-Zn-In Sacrificial Anode

Anode map showing locations of anode inside the tanks shall be in accordance with “General Cathodic
Protection System Layout” GST-4510494343-GBRG1-RA-2309-60002.
7.2 Recommendations

7.2.1 Impressed Current Cathodic Protection

A properly designed asphalt tank cushion constructed on a stable, properly prepared subsoil may be
effective in eliminating intrusion of groundwater, soil-side corrosion, and the need for cathodic protection.
Preparation of a stable soil to support the asphaltic slab is very important to ensure the continued integrity
of the pad. Unstable soil may induce cracks in the asphalt through which water and contaminants can
permeate to the steel tank bottom and provide a corrosive environment.

7.2.2 Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection

Flush mounted type sacrificial anodes with parameters as stated in Section 6.7 are recommended for
protection of the internal exposed parts of the 2# liquid storage tanks.

The anodes shall be welded radially on the internal bottom plates of the tank structure as much as
possible. This will always ensure immersion of anodes. However, the anodes can be distributed among
the various components of the tank (shell and bottom) within the 5m water accumulation height if there
are no enough space on the internal bottom plates.

The distance between adjacent anodes shall be at a minimum of 0.5m in order to avoid interference and
shielding.

The anodes shall be placed on the internal tank bottom plates by welding of the anode cores/insert to
doubler (wrap) plates which is then welded to the plates. Welding ensures the closest electrical contact
between the anode and surface to be protected, thus ensuring good conductivity between anodes and the
protected surfaces through the flat bar insert material (anode cores).
