LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

Linear Equation - any equation of them form 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒚 + 𝒄 = 𝟎, where a, b ,

and c are real numbers with not both a and b equal to 0.

Examples of linear equations:

1. 2𝑥 − 𝑦 + 7 = 0 3. 𝑥 + 5 = 0
2. 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6 4. 𝑦 = 6

EXERCISES

1. Determine which of the following are linear equations.

3
a. x +y = –2 c. y = x (x – 3 ) + 2
𝑥
1
b. y = 3x - (x – 4) d. (x + 1 )2 - 𝑥 2 + y = 4
2

2. Determine which of the given points are on the graph of the

equation.
1
a. 2x + y = 7 ; ( 2, 3) , ( 0, 5) , ( ,6)
2
−1
b. 2y – 3x – 5 = 0; ( 1, 1 ) , ( -1,-4 ), ( - 2 , )

Graphing of Linear Equation Using Three Points

1. Complete the table and graph.

a. 2x + 3y = 5 x -1 2
y 5

𝑦
b. x = +1 x 0 2
2
y 0

c. 𝑦 = 4𝑥 + 3 x 0 2
y 0

d. 3𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 4 = 0 x 1
y 0 2
Graphing of Linear Equation Using Intercepts

1. Determine the intercepts of the following equations and graph.

a. 3x + 4y = 24 c. y = 4x + 3 e. x = - 6
b. 2x – 3y = 12 d. y = -2
c. 3( x + 5 ) + y = 5( 2y – 4 ) – 8
2. Draw the graph of
a. x = 3 c. x = - 5 e. y = 0
b. y = - 4 d. y = 2
3. Find a value of k for which the given point will be on the graph of the
equation. Once k has been obtained, write the equation in the form y
= mx + b.
a. x + ky = 3 ; ( 1 , 2) c. 2y + kx = 7 ; ( 1, 3 )
b. 5y – 2x = k; ( - 2, -1 ) d. 3x + ky = 8 ; ( 2, 1)

4. Change the following equations to y =mx + b.

a. 2x – y + 4= 0
b. 3( x + 2y ) – ( x – y ) = 5
1 1
c. (x+1)- ( y + 1 )= 2x + y + 1
3 2
d. 3y – 4x – 5 = 0
e. – 2( x – 3y ) + 5( x – y ) = - 2
2 3
f. (x–2)= (y+3)
