Long, long ago, when the gods and goddesses used to mingle in the affairs of mortals, there
was a small kingdom on the slope of Mount Wayang in West Java. The King, named Sang P
rabu, was a wise man. He had an only daughter, called Princess Teja Nirmala, who was fam
ous for her beauty but she was not married. One day Sang Prabu made up his mind to settle
the matter by a show of strength.
After that, Prince of Blambangan, named Raden Begawan had won the competition. Unfortu
nately, the wicked fairy, Princess Segara fell in love with Raden Begawan and used magic p
ower to render him unconscious and he forgot his wedding. When Sang Prabu was searchin
g, Raden Begawan saw him and soon realized that he had been enchanted by the wicked fai
ry. The fairy could not accept this, so she killed Raden Begawan. When Princess Teja Nirma
la heard this, she was very sad. So a nice fairy took her to the Kahyangan.

Sangkuriang liked hunting very much, especially deer. He often hunted to the wood usying hi
s arrow. When he went hunting , Tumang was always with him.
One day Dayang Sumbi wanted to have deer’s heart so she asked Sangkuriang to hunt for a
deer. Then Sangkuriang when to the wood with his arrow and his faithful dog. Tumang, but a
fher several days in the wood Sangkuriang could not find any deer. Then where all disappea
red. Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate. He did not want to disappoint her mother s
o he killed Tumang. He did not know that Tumang was his father. Tumang’s heart to her mot
her. But Dayang Sumbi knew that it was Tumang’s heart. She was so angry that she could n
ot control her emotion. She hit Sangkuriang at his head Sangkuriang was wounded. There w
as a scar in his head. She also repelled her son. Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.
Many years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man. He wandered everywher
e. One day he arrived. at his own village but he did not realize it. There he met Dayang Sum
bi. At the time Dayang Sumbi was given an eternal beauty by God so she stayed young fore
ver. Both of them did know each other. So they fall in love and then they decided to marry. B
ut then Dayang Sumbi recognized a scar on Sangkuriang’s head. She knew that Sangkurian
g was his son. It was impossible for them to marry. She told him but he did not beliave her. H
e wished that they marry soon. So Dayang Sumbi gave very difficult condition. She asked Sa
ngkuriang to build a lake and a boat in one night! She said she needed that for honeymoon.
Sangkuriang agreed. With the help of genie and spiritis, Sangkuriang tired to build them. By
midnight he had completed the lake by building a dam in Citarum river. Then he started maki
ng the boat. It was almost dawn when he almost finished it. Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept
watching on him. She was very worried when she knew this. So she made lights in the east.
Then the spiritis thought that was already dawn. It was time for them to leave. They left Sang
kuriang alone. Without their help he could not finish the boat.
Sangkuriang was angry. He kicked the boat. Then the boat turned upside down. It, leter, bec
ame Mounth Tangkuban Perahu. Which means an upside-down boat. From a distant the mo
unt really looks like an upside down boat.

as a Daegdog, which meant thunder. His wife, on the other hand, was kind and gentle. They
had a daughter, Aganhon. She was as lovely as the dawn.
Years passed by and Aganhon grew lovelier. Men from far and nearby places came to
ask for her love. Among them was Maeopig. He had an uncontrollable temper, but Daegdog
chose him to be Aganhon's husband.
Maeopig the bridegroom was very happy but the girl was not. She locked herself in her

The next day, Aganhon appeared to her father's dream, and said there will be a tree
growing in the grave as the remembrance.
The next morning, the sad parents visited their daughter's grave. They found a huge
tree full of heart-shaped fruit. The fruit were sweet and aromatic like Aganhon, the helpless
girl. Since then, the fruit has been known as the mango.

his release, the genie granted Badang’s wish to be the strongest man alive.

mperial warrior. Soon, other kingdoms heard of Badang’s fame and sent their warriors to cha

Padang. She had a son, called Malin Kundang. The old woman loved her son very much.
When he was fifteen years old, he worked as a porter at Muara.
One day a skipper asked him to work on his ship. Malin told his mother that heliked

The skipper liked him. One day the skipper fell ill. He called Malin Kundang and his
daughter Nilam Sari. The skipper said, “You must become husband and wife. I give all my

One day, a beautiful ship came to Muara. The ship belonged to Malin Kundang.
Malin Kundang got out of the ship proudly. Mande Rubiah was at Muara. She was sure the
owner of the ship was her son. She shouted, “Malin! Malin! My son!” She tried to embrace
him, but he felt ashamed to confess it. He instead laughed. “Insane woman! Stay away!”
He asked his guards to chase her. She fell down. Malin got on the ship. The ship sailed.
When the ship turned to Gunung Padang, the old woman knelt down. She cried and prayed,
“God, show him your power, my son is sinful.” Then the storm hit Malin’s ship and a
lightening stinged him, making him burnt and turned him into a stone.

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Kadita. Because of her be
auty she was called Dewi Srengenge. It means the goddess of sun. Her father was
King Munding Wangi. Although he had a beautiful daughter, he was unhappy beca
use he always expected to have a son.
The King decided to marry Dewi Mutiara. He had a son from her. Dewi Mutiara wan
ted her son to become a king in the future. She asked the King to send his daughte
r away. The King did not agree.
Dewi Mutiara called a black wizard to curse Kadita. She wanted Kadita’s beautiful b
ody full of ulcer. Then, Kadita’s body was full of ulcer. It smelled bad. The beautiful

e King did not want her daughter to be a rumor so he sent his daughter away. The
poor princess did not know where to go. However, she had a noble heart. She did
not have any bad feeling about her step mother.
She walked for almost seven days and seven nights. Then, she came to the South
Ocean. The ocean was so clean and clear. She jumped into the water and swam.
Suddenly, there was a miracle. The ocean water cured her illness. She became mo
re beautiful than before. She also had a power to command the whole South Ocea
n. She became a fairy called Nyi Roro Kidul or The Queen of South Ocean.
A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant-like creature named Kbo Iwo. The p
eople of Bali used to say that Kbo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He
was satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the Balinese people enough food for a thousa
nd men.
Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty and the new harvest w
as still a long way off. This made Kbo Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he destroyed
all the houses and even all the temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage.
So, they came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his stupidity. Th
ey asked Kbo Iwo to build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he
had destroyed. After they fed Kbo Iwo, he began to dig a deep hole.
One day he had eaten too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the village ga
ve a sign, and the villagers began to throw the limestone they had collected before into the h
ole. The limestone made the water inside the hole boiling . Kbo Iwo was buried alive. Then
the water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it overflowed and formed Lake Batur.
The mound of earth dug from the well by Kbo Iwo is known as Mount Batur.

In the Kingdom of Medang Kamulan, in Java, came a young when man, by the name of Aji S
aka to fight Dewatacengkar, the cruel King of The Country who had a habit to eat human fles
h of his own people. Aji Saka himself he came from Bumi Majeti.
One day he told his two servants, by the name of Dara and Sembodo, that he was going to j
ava. He told them that while he was away, both of them have to guards his Heirloom / Puso
ko. No one except Aji Saka himself not a allowed to take the Pusoko. In the big battle, Aji S
aka could successfully push Dewata Cengkar to fall to the South Sea. Dewata Cengkar did
not die, he became a Bajul Putih (White Crocodile). Aji Saka became a ruler of Medangkam
ulan.
Meanwhile a woman of the village of Dadapan, found an egg. She put the egg in her Lumbu
ng (Rice Barn). After a certain period the egg vanished, instead a snake found in the rice b
arn. The villagers would like to kill the snake, but the snake said : “I’m the son Aji Saka, brin
g me to him”.
Aji Saka told the snake, that he would be recognized as his son, if the could kll the Bajul Puti
h in the South Sea. After a long stormy battle which both sides demonstrating physical stren
gth and showing skillfull ability of fighting, the snake could kill Bajul Putih.
As had been promised the snake was recognized as Aji Saka’s son and he was given a nam
e Jaka Linglung (a stupid boy).
In the palace Jaka Linglung greedily ate domestic pets of the palace. He was punished by th
e King, expelling him to live in the Jungle of Pesanga. he was tightly roped until he could not
move his head. He was instructed only to eat things which fall to his mouth.
One day, a group of 9 (nine) village boys were playing around in that Jungle. Suddenly it wa
s raining heavily. They had to find a shelter, luckily there was a cave. Only 8 (eight) boys w
ent inside the cave, the other one who was suffering from very bad skin disease, sting and di
rty, he had to stay out of the cave. All of a sudden, the cave was falling apart. The 8 (eight)
boys vanished, only the one who stayed outside was safe. The cave in fact was the mouth of
Jaka Linglung.

angrier and angrier. As a proof of her sacred love, she asked her husband to kill her. As a
last request. She asked her husband to throw her dead body into the river. She said that
if the water in the river smelled terrible, it meant that she had ever been sinful, but if it
smelled fragrant it meant that she was innocent.
Raden Banterang who was unable to control his emotions soon stabbed his keris (dagger)
into his wife’s chest. She died instantly. The dead body of Made Surati was quickly thrown
into the dirty river. Raden Banterang was shocked to see the river suddenly become clean
and as clear as glass with a fragrant smell. Raden Banterang screamed crazily and regretted
his deed. He walked unsteadily and fell into the river screaming,
‘Banyu...Wangi...Banyuwangi!’ This means “Fragrant water”.
Banyuwangi was born from the proof of noble and sacred love. From then on, the place is
called Banyuwangi.

ce, people heard thequeen crying. Every woman felt sad and began crying, too. Then, every
body was crying.
Suddenly, from the underground, a spring emerged. It made a pool of water. Soon, the place
became a big lake. The lake finally sank the kingdom. Nowadays, people called the lake " Te
laga Warna". It means "Lake of Color". On a bright day, the lake is full of color. These colors
come from shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky around the lake. But some people sai
d that the colors are from the princess's necklace, which spreads at the bottom of the lake.
1. One day, Toba went to the river to fish. After waiting for a long time, Toba felt
that his fishing rod was pulled tightly. With all his strength he pulled the fishing
rod, It turned out that what he got was a very large fish. Toba immediately
brought the big fish home. Arrived home he put the fish in the kitchen. He went
out looking for firewood, but when he returned home he did not find the big fish
anymore. How shocked he was to see a woman with a beautiful face sitting on
his chair. Toba immediately fell in love with that beautiful woman

Besides that Toba was also known as a helpful child who liked to help others. He
never stayed silent seeing the old in trouble

were in vain because the water continued to chase him. He started to sink by the
water that was getting wider and deeper. Then place where it happened turned
into a very large lake. The North Sumatran named the lake, Lake Toba.

Not only that, he also told his son to climb the tallest tree on the hill. Samosir
followed his mother's orders. He ran fast and reached the hill in short time. The
mother came out of the house. From a distance he saw that his son had reached
the hill. He also ran towards the river. Not so long ago she arrived at the river
bank and soon the weather changed, black clouds covered the place. Thunder
stroke and it rained heavily. Toba's wife threw herself into the river, immediately
she turned into a big fish and at once the water overflowed everywhere.
6. One day Toba was very angry with his son, Samosir. Because Samosir had
eaten all the food his wife prepared to him. Toba immediately hit his son
repeatedly. "Insolent child, you descendants of fish who do not know you,"
shouted Toba to his son. Samosir cried and immediately ran home. When he got
home, he soon complained to his mother that he was beaten by his father. Not
only that, he also told what his father had said to him. Her mother was very sad
to hear that. Her husband broke his promise.

Finally, a generous woman helped him. She gave him shelter and a meal. When the boy
wanted to leave, this old woman gave him a “lesung”, a big wooden mortar for pounding rice.
She reminded him, “please remember, if there is a flood you must save yourself. Use this
“lesung” as a boat”. The “lesung” was happy and thanked the old woman.The little boy
continued his journey. While he was passing through the village, he saw many people
gathering on the field. The boy came closer and saw a stick stuck in the ground. People
challenged each other to pull out that stick. Everybody tried, but nobody succeeded. “Can I
try?”, asked the little boy. The crowd laughed mockingly. The boy wanted to try his luck so
he stepped forward and pulled out the stick. He could do it very easily. Everybody was
dumbfounded.
Suddenly, from the hole left by stick, water spouted out. It did not stop until it flooded the
village. And no one was saved from the water except the little boy and the generous old
woman who gave him shelter and meal. As she told him, he used the “lesung” as a boat and
picked up the old woman. The whole village became a huge lake. It is now known as Rawa
Pening Lake in Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia.

On the princess birthday, people gathered in the court yard. Cheers grew lo
uder and louder when the king, queen, and princess appeared.
“My beloved daughter, I give this necklace to you. People in the kingdom lov
e you so much, it is a gift from them.” Said the king while presenting the necklace.
The princess looked at it briefly,’ i don’t want it, it’s ugly’” she answered. Then She
threw it away.
Everybody was speechless. Nobody could say anything. They didn’t believe
that the princess would do such a cruel thing to hurt everybody’s feelings. The que
en and the people were sad, they began crying. After that there was a miracle. Th
e earth was crying too. Suddenly the spring emerged from the ground. The water
drowned all over the kingdom to be a lake.
People called the lake “Telaga Warna”. On a bright day, it is full of colors. T
he colors come from the shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky around the lak
e. However, some people said the shadows are from the pieces of princess neckla
ce which are scattered at bottom of the lake.
