UNIT 2: English – Vietnamese Translation – Student’s copy

Food for thought

1. Nothing is like starting the day with a bowl of steaming hot pho,the favorite beef
or chicken noodle soup that is served almost anywhere and anytime in Vietnam.
Pho has become increasingly popular in the United States, and for many
Americans that is what they think of when they hear Vietnamese food.
2. Vietnam's history is one of foreign domination but they have always tried to
make the best out of even a bad thing. Chinese and French influence has left a
delicious mark on Vietnam's cuisine while American legacy is limited to spoons
and forks in cheap restaurants made from wartime scrap metal, including
downed aircraft.
3. Obviously, there is more to Vietnamese cuisine than pho. With around 500
traditional dishes, there is something for everyone. Soup lovers can choose
between rice soups, fish soups, vegetable soups, noodle soups, beef broth and
other stocks in unending variety.
4. What is the special ingredient that makes Vietnamese food so tasty?Fish sauce,
of course! Made of fermented fish, it has a strong and distinctive smell.
Vietnamese cooks simply cannot live without fish sauce, an ingredient in
numerous dishes and served as a condiment with practically all rice meals.
5. For vegetarians, there are sumptuous dishes that look like they contain meat but
don't. Instead, the meat-looking parts are made of tofu, mushrooms and dried,
cooked and fermented vegetables. But what really says something about the
quality of the food is whether you like it. If you don’t, change your mind.
