(4) SANCHARI VARNA : The mi~ture form ·of sthayi varna, arohi varna and avrohi varna

is known as sanchari v~ma. hi: this form, sometimes a note go~s higher ~r comes to
lower note or a no·te is repeated again and again. For example SSS, RRR, SRGMP,
PMGRS. •
Importance of Varna :
Varna produces beauty in every type of singing. Music is incomplete without varna. If a
raga is played or sung in a correct manner and the conduct of swara is correct then on]y a raga
becomes entertaining. Mere aroha avroha is not sufficient. On a concluding note, it _would be
right to say that in the word "Varna" entire music resides.

KAN
The simple meaning of kan is atom or grain which imp Iies the use of a note in a very small
amount. Just touching the front note or back note of the main note is called Kan. This kan is
used to enhance the grace of musical creations. This is also called 'sparsh swara' or grace
note. If an instrument player or a singer haye mastered their art, only then the singer or player
has the capability to use this note. There.-~r~ mainly two kind~ of Kan :
(1) PURV LAGAN KAN : .This note is ~-~-~d- before the main note or· S\\'ara and it is also
written before the main swara on the left side as Ra.
(2) ANU LAGAN KAN : This note is used after t~e main note. It is written on the right
side of the main swara as GM.

Meend is a type of ancient gamak. The process of going from one note to another note .
without breaking the voice is known as MEEND. For example : from going S to M, R and G

be heard di~ently . For .showing .meend in the notation, inverted half moon is drawn above the
swaras like SM. By using meend, the rnusical composition becomes more soft and mesmerising.

MURKI
Murki in a simple sense is a kind of ear ring. But in music, murki is a type of' Sfurit gamak'.
In this type of gamak, 3 swaras are useq in a fast laya like SRS, RNS. The notation or the
writing method of murki is mentioned here as : SRs OR RN S·

Murki is mainly used in tappa, t~ym~i or dadra singing styles.
