ABOUT
SMUGGLER'S TREASURE
Rum-running, the organized smuggling of importing Rum and other
liquor by sea and over land to the United States, became a highly profitable
business once Prohibition took effect in 1920.
Smuggler's Treasure takes you back in time and lets you relive the many
joyful moments people had after getting their hands on a bottle of "liquid
gold" in times that drinking Rum was illegal.
PROHIBITION
Prohibition in the United
States was a nationwide
constitutional ban on the
production, importation,
transportation, and sale
of alcoholic beverages
from 1920 to 1933.
SPEAKEASY BARS
When Prohibition took effect in 1920, thousands of bars closed down.
People still wanting to satisfy their thirst had to buy from illegal sellers,
also called bootleggers or rum runners. Another option was to visit
illegal and hidden private bars, also known as "speakeasies".
