"Exploring the Impact of Architecture through: Navarasa Emotions”
Navarasa (meaning '9 emotions') is the cornerstone of human existence. Navarasas encompass the
entire spectrum of what it means to be human. But what happens if one of these Navarasas goes
missing? Can we even stay unaffected? Can we even survive its absence? Can we even...call
ourselves human?
OBJECTIVE:
Architectural design has a tremendous emotional impact on how people perceive and experience
surroundings. In this project, participants must investigate how architectural shapes, textures, colors,
light, and space might elicit the Navarasa—the nine primary emotions of Indian aesthetics (Rasa
theory). Participants must grasp the psychological and emotional effects of architecture, as well as
how these feelings might influence design decisions. By embracing the nine emotions, you can
transcend functionality and the space can become a powerful expression of human experience.
CONCEPT:
Participants are encouraged to be mindful of things mentioned below while capturing the
moment.
Design Focus: Each design should visually interpret how architecture can evoke one or more of
the Navarasas:
1. Shringar (Love, Beauty)
2. Hasya (Joy, Laughter)
3. Karuna (Compassion, Sadness
4. Raudra (Anger, Fury)

DESIGN GUIDELINES:
Participants have to pick three spaces from any of three typologies of building- residential,
institutional and public space to understand and decode the FEELING of space.
Create one primary graphic for each Rasa or a series of designs focusing on how multiple
Rasas coexist in space.
Carefully select colors that reflect the emotions of each Rasa.
If text is included, it should enhance the emotional narrative of the design.
Incorporate symbolize to express the architectural elements of the space.
Design file should not exceed 10MB in size and should have a resolution of 300PPI
Submit digital format (PNG) or a hand drawn hardcopy
Team of 4 members and each team has to have students from 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th year
mandatory.
Minimum of 1 entry and maximum of 3 entries from each college
Note: Sheet guidelines needed to be followed as per NASA India guidelines.
DELIVERABLES:
1. Presentation – Brief presentation (5-7 slides) explaining the design choices, how the emotional
connection is made, and how architecture serves as a medium for expression.
2. Final Graphics – A series of images illustrating the architectural interpretation of each of the 3
spaces. A2 sheet for submission. (max of 5 sheets.- Min of ). (portrait or landscape orientation).
3. Report - Though process / process sheets. A4 sheet report. (250 words)
4. Bring hard copies of the submission on 24th oct to the convention for the pin up if shortlisted.
(Matt print on normal sheet).

JUDGEMENT CRITERIA:
How effectively does the design evoke the selected Rasa(s)
Originality in the interpretation and application of Navarasa in architectural contexts.
Skill in layout, composition, color theory, and overall design quality.
How well does the design communicate the emotional nuances of architecture?

Submission deadline: October 19, 2024,18:00 IST. (soft copy)
