CE 212: Structural Mechanics and Materials Sessional
Experiment No: -5
Determination of tensile strength & bend test of MS rebar and
tension test of steel plate (coupon test)
Objectives of the Test:
Test Standard and Specification:
Rebar tension test - ASTM A 615M-16
Coupon test- ASTM E-8 M-16
Bend test - ASTM E 290
Apparatus Used:
Testing Machine Used:
Test Specimen:
CE 212: Structural Mechanics and Materials Sessional
Procedure:
Procedure for Tension Test of Rebar
i. Tension test is performed according to the specifications of ASTM A 370.
ii. Measure the diameter of the specimen by slide calipers.
iii. Punch a gage length of 8 inch on the deformed bar by using punch gage.
iv. Fix the specimen in position.
v. Apply load at a convenient interval and increase load gradually till a waist is formed in
between the marked points and the specimen breaks.
vi. Record the maximum and the breaking load.
vii. Remove the broken specimen and measure smallest cross-sectional area and the final
viii. Length (Lf) between the gage marks by fitting the two ends of the broken test piece
together.
ix. Note the characteristics of the fractured surfaces and draw a sketch of the failed
specimen.
Tension Test of Re-Bar
Procedure for Bend Test
1. Bend test is performed according to the specifications of ASTM E 290.
2. Reinforcing bars are bend tested using the Universal Testing Machine (UTM).
3. Bars are placed horizontally on the supports that are positioned in accordance to the
code. The plunger “r” in diameter is defined by the equation:
Where: r = diameter of the plunger in mm
dbar = diameter of bar being tested in mm
t = thickness of tested specimen other than bars in mm
(c is the distance between lower supports)
4. The force required to bend the bar 180˚ is a function of bar diameter. To avoid instability
at the supports, the base-blocks are fixed using anchorages.
5. A loading rate is set to be 0.5kN per graduation and the deformation process is observed
during testing. When a full bend is achieved, the load is removed and the bar detached from
the apparatus (Fig. 5.2).
6. In accordance to the ASTM code E 290 the bend is observed without any equipment and
inspected for cracks or chipping.
5.3.3 Procedure for Rebend Test
1. Rebend test is performed according to the specifications of IS 1786:2008.
2. The test piece is bent to an included angle of 135˚ (see Fig. 2.5) using a mandrel of
appropriate diameter.
3. The bent piece is aged by keeping in boiling water (100°C) for 30 minutes and then
allowed to cool.
CE 212: Structural Mechanics and Materials Sessional
4. The piece shall then be bent back to have an included angle of 157.5˚. The specimen
shall be considered to have passed the test if there is no rupture or cracks visible to a
person of normal or corrected vision on the rebent portion.
5.4.2 Procedure for Steel Coupon Tension Test
i. Coupon test is performed according to the specifications of ASTM A 370.
ii. Measure the thickness, width of the specimen and calculate the original cross sectional
area.
Cross sectional area, A = Thickness, t x Width, w
iii. Punch a gage length of required size on the specimen by using punch gage.
iv. Fix the specimen in position.
v. Apply load at a convenient rate till the specimen breaks.
vi. Record the load at yielding and the maximum load and calculate the yielding strength and
ultimate stress.
vii. Remove the broken specimen and measure the final length (Lf) between the gage marks
by fitting the two ends of the broken test piece together and calculate the percent elongation.
