CO1 :: describe the background in the broad field of digital systems design.
CO2 :: represent various number systems and codes and analyze the logic simplification.
CO3 :: visualize the concept of logic gates to design half adder and full adder and combinational
circuits
CO4 :: apply knowledge of basic gates or universal gates to construct various flip-flops.
CO5 :: explain the basic concepts of multiplexers and demultiplexers, including their operation
and applications
CO6 :: apply knowledge of flip flops to construct shift register and counters and analyze the
performance of various shift registers

Introduction to Digital Electronics : Distinction between analog and digital signal, Applications and
advantages of digital signals
Number System : Binary Number System, Octal Number System, Hexadecimal number system,
Number System Conversions, Binary Addition, Binary Subtraction, Binary Multiplication, Binary
Division, 1's Complement method of Addition, 1's Complement method of Subtraction, 2's
Complement method of Addition, 2's Complement method of Subtraction, conversion from decimal
and hexadecimal to binary and vice-versa., Sign magnitude method of representation,, Floating point
representation
Unit II
Codes & Parity : Concept of Code, Weighted Codes, Non Weighted Codes, BCD, Excess 3 code, Gray
Code, Concept of Parity, Single/ Double Parity, Error Detection and Correction (Hamming Code),
Alpha-numeric codes: ASCII, EBCDIC and Unicode
Unit III
Logic Gates : Concept of negative and positive logic, Construction of NOT, AND and OR gates from
NAND and NOR gates (universal gates)., Definition, symbols and truth tables of gates
Logic Simplifications : Postulates of Boolean Algebra, De Morgan's Theorems, Various Identities,
Implementation of Boolean Equations with Gates, Karnaugh Map, Formulation of truth table and
Boolean equation for simple problem., Karnaugh map (upto 4 variables) and simple application in
developing combinational logic circuits
Unit IV
Arithmetic circuits and Multiplexing circuits : Half Adder Circuit Design and Implementation, Full
Adder Circuit Design and Implementation, Half Subtracter Circuit Design and Implementation, Full
Subtracter Design and Implementation, 4 bit adder/subtracter, Adder and Subtractor IC (7484), 2-bit
comparator, Basic functions and block diagram of Encoders and decoders., Basic functions and block
diagram of Multiplexers and De-Multiplexers. Different types and ICs., Four bit decoder circuits for 7
segment display and decoder/driver ICs.
Unit V
Latches and Flip Flops : Concept and types of latch with their working and applications, Operation
using waveforms and truth tables of RS, T, D, JK and Master/Slave JK flip flops, Difference between a
latch and a flip flop, Flip flop ICs
Unit VI
Counters and Shift Registers : Decade counter, Universal shift register, Serial in parallel out, serial
in serial out, parallel in serial out, parallel in parallel out., Buffer register, Tristate Buffer register, IC
7495, Pre settable and programmable counters, Ring counter with timing diagram, Counter ICs,
Introduction to Asynchronous and Synchronous counters, Binary up/down counters (upto MOD-8)
