Wang Xinyi, applicant for Master of Laws (LLM) in Common Law, CUHK
Personal Statement
Participating in the WTO International Moot Court, I deeply appreciated the
significance of the common law system in dealing with international legal affairs. In
one case concerning disputes over the international sale of goods, I acted as the leader
and debater, gaining insight into the Dispute Resolution Mechanism (DSU) for the
international sale of goods, especially its application under the United Nations
Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). Delving into the
interaction of DSU and CISG, I found that they jointly built a legal framework that
provides a stable and predictable legal environment for global trade, which
demonstrated common law’s great charm in addressing international disputes. Most
importantly, common law keeps abreast with volatile international challenges, as its
case law can provide flexible and fair solutions to complex international trade issues
through accumulated precedents. Aspiring to be proficient in handling international
legal affairs, I reckon the LLM in Common Law offered by CUHK as my optimum
choice.
With its global reputation, world-class teaching faculties and rigorous learning
atmosphere, CUHK has long been my ideal destination for further education. Situated
in Hong Kong, a metropolis whose legal system combines the characteristics of
Western and Chinese legal systems, CUHK will arm me with a global perspective to
facilitate my studies in common law. I am also captivated by the LLM’s inspirational
courses, among which Common Law: Origins and Development, Common Law:
Globalization and Convergence, and Artificial Intelligence and the Common Law
cater to my academic interests and career requirements. Besides, CUHK is an ideal
platform for me to engage in frontier scientific research and learn from erudite
professors and scholars, paving the way for my further doctoral studies. Collaborating
with top-notch international institutions and international law firms, CUHK will make
me access to cross-border legal practices through valuable internships.
Specializing in Law (Legal Systems for Legal Affairs) at Hainan University (211
project), I have taken a wide range of professional courses, making me a qualified
candidate for the LLM program. Specifically, International law and International
Economic Law involved me in various international cases and multinational business
disputes, deepening my understanding of integrating economic law and common law
in addressing complex issues while establishing a solid foundation for comprehending
the international legal system. Through International Commercial Law English, I
enhanced my language proficiency, which will help me better adapt to CUHK’s
English teaching mode. To combine legal competence with technical application, I
took the helm in leading my team to build an AI platform called “AI Gibbon,” using
generated artificial intelligence to promote rural revitalization in communities around
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park through promoting tourism and facilitating
internal management of the park. To this end, I self-learned data scraping and SPSS
analysis, and then trained the AI model by inputting a large amount of legal data, as to

improve my interdisciplinary ability. Ultimately, the project was awarded a silver
prize in the “Challenge Cup” Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Work
Competition, which serves as a testament to my research and leadership abilities.
Additionally, I possess a solid capacity for composing well-researched and articulate
scholarly papers. My empirical thesis entitled Dilemma and Solutions of Labor Rights
Protection of Online Contract Workers showcased my concern for social problems
and my resolution to eradicate them.
Beyond the ivory tower, I interned at Beijing Jingshi (Haikou) Law Firm,
transforming theoretical knowledge into actual use. Responsible for translating and
proofreading legal contracts, I gained insight into the contracts of various cases
ranging from house leasing and international sale of goods to the dispute of breach of
contract liability. I also enhanced my abilities in analyzing legal problems and
searching articles of law effectively and accurately.
From my perspective, the study of law is a lifelong pursuit and I still have a long way
to go in this arduous yet rewarding journey. I will immerse myself in the study of
existing legal frameworks and policies while exploring their intersection with other
disciplines like computer science. Aiming to become a law professor at a higher
education institution, I will endeavor to impart legal knowledge and moral criteria to
my students whilst contributing to policy-making in pursuit of seeking welfare for
vulnerable groups. The LLM program offered by CUHK will serve as a springboard
to my career goal.
