SPELLING RULES

“EI” or “IE” RULE POSSESSIVES


• Usually “i” before “e”, except after “c”, or as sounding • Add apostrophe “s” (’s) to show possessive.
like “a” as in “neighbor” or “weigh”. example: bear - bear’s
examples: piece believe chief receive • Plural words ending in “s,” the apostrophe is
exceptions: either their science leisure after the “s” (s’).
example: kitten’s bed - three kittens’ beds
COMPOUND WORDS
• Use the full spelling of both words. Don’t use a hyphen. PLURALS
examples: cupcake firewood • Adding “s” or “es”
Add “s” to most nouns and verbs.
PREFIXES examples: cats plays
• Prefixes just add on and never change the spelling. Add “es” if words end in “ch,” “sh,” “x,” “s,” or “z.”
examples: dislike indoors examples: churches dishes faxes
misspell repay • Words ending in “y”
• Sometimes the prefixes “ex” and “self” use a hyphen. If preceded by a consonant, change the “y”
examples: ex-president self-serve to “i” and add “es.”
example: candy - candies
SUFFIXES If preceded by a vowel, don’t change the “y,”
• In most cases, don’t change the spelling, just add just add “s.”
