Sheet No. (3)
(1) Prove that the following functions satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equation:
(a) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 + 2𝑖𝑥𝑦
b) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑒 𝑥 (cos 𝑦 + 𝑖 sin 𝑦)

(2) State if the following functions are analytic or not:

(a) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑖𝑧𝑧̅
b) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑒 −2𝑥 (cos 2𝑦 − 𝑖 sin 2𝑦 )
c) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑖/ 𝑧 8
d) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝑅𝑒(𝑧 2 ) − 𝑖 𝐼𝑚(𝑧 2 )
e) 𝑓(𝑧) = 1/(𝑧 − 𝑧 5 )
f) 𝑓(𝑧) = 𝐴𝑟𝑔 2𝜋𝑧
g) 𝑓(𝑧) = 3 𝜋 2 /𝑧 3 + 4 𝜋 2 𝑧
h) 𝑓(𝑧) = cos 𝑥 cosh 𝑦 − 𝑖 sin 𝑥 sinh 𝑦

(3) State if the following functions are harmonic or not, if yes, find the
corresponding analytic functions 𝐟(𝐳) = 𝐮(𝐱, 𝐲) + 𝐢 𝐯(𝐱, 𝐲):
a) 𝑢 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2
b) 𝑢 = 𝑥𝑦
c) 𝑢 = sin 𝑥 cosh 𝑦
d) 𝑣 = (2𝑥 + 1)𝑦
e) 𝑣 = 𝑒 𝑥 sin 2𝑦
f) 𝑢 = 𝑥/(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 )
(4) Determine a and b that the given functions are harmonic and find their
harmonic conjugate:
a) 𝑢 = 𝑒 𝜋𝑥 cos 𝑎𝑦 .
b) 𝑢 = cos 𝑎𝑥 cosh 2𝑦.
c) 𝑢 = 𝑎𝑥 3 + 𝑏𝑥𝑦.

(5) Show that 𝒖(𝒙, 𝒚) = 𝟐𝒙(𝟑 − 𝒚) is a harmonic function and find its
harmonic conjugate 𝒗(𝒙, 𝒚). Express the functions 𝒇(𝒛) = 𝒖(𝒙, 𝒚) +
𝒊 𝒗(𝒙, 𝒚) in terms of z.

(6) Show that 𝒖(𝒙, 𝒚) = 𝒆𝒙 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒚 , is a harmonic function and find 𝒗(𝒙, 𝒚), so
that 𝒇(𝒛) = 𝒖(𝒙, 𝒚) + 𝒊 𝒗(𝒙, 𝒚) is an analytic function.
