CHAPTER-1

REVIEW OF VARIOUS ENERGY SOURCES

Energy management involves the systematic

monitoring, controlling, and optimizing of energy use in
various sectors, including industrial, commercial, and
residential settings. It aims to enhance energy
efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize environmental
impact. Here’s a breakdown of its key components and
importance:

Key Components of Energy Management

1. Monitoring:
o Data Collection: Gathering data on energy

consumption through meters and sensors.

o Analysis: Analysing the data to identify

patterns, inefficiencies, and areas for

improvement.

2. Control:
o Implementation of Technologies: Using

energy-efficient technologies and systems to

control energy use.
o Automation: Automating processes to
optimize energy use based on real-time data.

3. Optimization:
o Energy Audits: Conducting thorough audits to

understand where energy is used and lost.

o Strategic Planning: Developing and

implementing strategies to improve energy

efficiency.
o Continuous Improvement: Regularly

reviewing and updating energy management

practices.
Importance of Energy Management

1. Cost Reduction:
o Lower Energy Bills: By optimizing energy

use, organizations can significantly reduce

their energy costs.
o Operational Efficiency: Efficient energy use

often translates to overall improved

operational efficiency.

2. Environmental Impact:
o Reduced Carbon Footprint: Efficient energy

use leads to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

o Sustainable Practices: Promotes the use of
renewable energy sources and sustainable
practices.

3. Compliance and Regulation:

o Meeting Standards: Helps organizations

comply with environmental regulations and

standards.
o Avoiding Penalties: Reduces the risk of fines

and penalties associated with non-compliance.

4. Resource Conservation:
o Sustainable Resource Use: Ensures the

judicious use of energy resources, contributing

to their conservation.
o Future-proofing: Prepares organizations for

future energy needs and challenges.

5. Enhanced Reputation:
o Corporate Responsibility: Demonstrates a

commitment to sustainability and responsible

energy use.
o Market Advantage: Can enhance brand

image and provide a competitive edge in the

marketplace.
6. Energy Security:
o Reduced Dependency: Lessens dependence

on non-renewable energy sources and external

suppliers.
o Risk Management: Mitigates risks associated

with energy supply fluctuations and price

volatility.
o

Implementation Strategies
• Energy Audits and Assessments: Regularly
conduct energy audits to identify areas for
improvement.
• Technology Upgrades: Invest in modern, energy-
efficient technologies and equipment.
• Employee Engagement: Educate and engage
employees in energy-saving practices.
• Performance Tracking: Continuously monitor
and track energy performance metrics.

ENERGYS ENAARIO OF INDIA AND WORLD

WIDE:
Present Energy Scenario of India and Worldwide:
Installed Capacity and Percentage Share of Energy
Sources
India's Energy Scenario
As of May 2023, India's total installed power capacity
stands at 417,668 MW. The energy mix is diversified as
follows:
India is pushing towards increasing its renewable
energy capacity significantly. The government has set
ambitious targets, aiming for 450 GW of renewable
energy capacity by 2030 (Ministry of Power) (MNRE).

Global Energy Scenario

The global energy landscape is also undergoing
significant changes. Here’s a snapshot of the global
installed capacity and the percentage share of different
energy sources as of the latest data:

Globally, the shift towards renewable energy sources is

evident, driven by technological advancements and
policy measures aimed at mitigating climate change.
However, fossil fuels still make up a significant portion
of the global energy mix (Central Electricity Authority)
(PIB).
Key Insights
• India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy
capacity, with a significant share already coming
from solar and wind power. However, coal remains
a major part of the energy mix.
• Worldwide, the transition to renewables is
accelerating, but fossil fuels still account for more
than half of the total energy capacity.
Both India and the global community are focusing on
diversifying their energy sources to ensure energy
security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and meet
increasing energy demands sustainably.
