WEEK: 7 DATE: CLASS: SS2

SUBJECT: BIOLOGY
LESSON TITLE: TISSUES AND SUPPORTING SYSTEMS
SUB-TITLE: SKELETON
PERIODS: 1& 2 DURATION: 80minutes
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Students should be able to;
1. Define skeleton
2. State the significance of the skeleton
3. List the forms of skeleton
4. Differentiate between bone and cartilage
KEY VOCABULARY WORDS: Bone, cartilage, chitin.
RESOURCES & MATERIALS: Biology Syllabus, Students, Wikipedia, Essential Biology by
M.C. Michael, College Biology by Idodo, bones of mammal, model of a skeleton, catfish, laptop,
YouTube and other related web resources.
BUILDING BACKGROUND: Students are asked to mention the different bones found in their
body and their function.
CONTENTS: SKELETON
It is the bony framework of the body that provides support, shape, and protection to soft tissues
and organs in the body.
IMPORTANCE OF SKELETON
1. To provide shape 3. For protection
2. To provide support 4. To manufacture blood cells
FORMS OF SKELETON: Cuticles ii. Bones iii. Cartilage
STRATEGIES & ACTIVITIES: The strategies to be used include: Discussion, chunk & think-
pair-share, and CLOZE strategies.
EMBEDDED SKILLS: Critical thinking and Problem-solving, Leadership and Personal
Development, Collaboration and Communication.
ACTIVITY 1: The teacher revises the topic previously taught by asking the students to list the
excretory organs used by mammals for carrying out excretion.
ACTIVITY 2: The students are asked to explain the significance of the skeleton
ACTIVITY 3: Students are asked to mention the forms of skeleton
ACTIVITY 4: Students are asked to differentiate between a bone and a cartilage.
ASSESSMENT (EVALUATION): (i) What is a skeleton?
(ii) mention four (4) importance of the skeleton
(iii) list the forms of the skeleton
WRAP-UP: The teacher guides the students to summarize the lesson by revising with them the
keywords.
ASSIGNMENT: State the types of skeleton

ACTIVITY 2: The students are asked to list the types of skeleton
ACTIVITY 3: Students are asked to explain the hydrostatic skeleton and give an example.
ACTIVITY 4: Students are asked to give examples of organisms with endoskeletons.
ASSESSMENT (EVALUATION):
(i) State the types of skeleton
(ii) Explain the hydrostatic skeleton
(iii) Describe the exoskeleton and give examples of organisms that exhibit it.
