1 Finding Limits Numerically & Graphically: Day 1 Notes

 Evaluating Limits Numerically: Making a ____________________________

x3  1
Example 1: Suppose you have the graph of the function f ( x)  , x  1 . For all values other than x = 1, you
x 1
will have a standard curve. At x = 1, it’s not clear what to expect. To get an idea of the behavior of the graph of f
near x =1, use two sets of x-values: one set that approaches 1 from the ______________________and another from the
_________________________.

f ( x) ?

 As x gets really close to 1 on both sides, f ( x) becomes really close to _________.

We can write this as:

Definition of a Limit: If f ( x) becomes really close to a single number L as x approaches c from either side, the limit
of f ( x) , as x approaches c, is L. This limit is written as

In other words, you are looking for what ____-value the function is getting close to as the ___-value gets really close
to a certain number.

Example 2: Evaluate the function f ( x)  at several points near x = 0 and use the result to estimate the

lim f ( x) .

 Evaluating Limits Graphically: Looking at the ______________________ of the function.

Example 4: Using the graph shown below, find the following.

(a) lim f ( x ) (b) f (0) (c) f (1) (d) lim f ( x )

x 0 x 1

Sometimes we want to find limits from one side or another (from the _______________ or from the _________________).
We do have a way to notate these “one-sided limits.”

o Limit from the right:

Example 5: Using Example 4, evaluate the following.

(a) lim  f ( x) (b) lim  f ( x)

What if we wanted to find lim f ( x) ? Next class we will look at examples where the limits do not exist.
x 4
For now, let’s look at a few more examples.

Example: Sketch the graph of a function where f (0)  3 and lim f ( x)  1.
x 0

Example: Using the table shown below, evaluate lim f ( x ).

x 0

Example: Using the graph shown below, evaluate the following or state if it is undefined.

(a) lim f ( x) (b) lim f ( x ) (c) lim f ( x ) (d) f (2) (e) f (1)
