Voltage measure in parallel in circuit

circuit switched on → measure the volt

circuit switched o → measure current

• brake the circuit to let the current ow through the multimeter

DC motor components

• Stator:

Horse shoe-shaped permanent Magnet

• Rotor (armature):

Coil between the poles

• Sliding contacts (Carbon, brushes)

Current ow:

• Through all a mature windings

• At the rotors here: two equal magnetic poles, repulsion of equal magnetic poles

• Rotor rotation
Rotor

• Using several coils or armature windings

Commutator

• With several segments

Current ow

• Through all armature windings

• At the rotor, here: two equal magnetic poles and an opposing magnetic pole

• Reversal of the magnetic eld upon passing the sliding contact

Rotor
Correctly assign the DC motor components.
Disadvantage:

• Magnetic eld within the stator not variable

• Very limited output

Application examples:

• Power windows

• Seat adjustment

• Windshield wipers

• Blower motors

Design:

• Starter motor

• Solenoid switch

• Meshing system

• Freewheel
Starter motor

What is a Starter Motor? A starter motor is simply an

electric motor that turns your engine on when you switch

the ignition. To do this, the starter motor requires a lot of

torque to turn the engine at such fast speeds, so that it pulls

fuel and air into the cylinders and compresses them at the

same time.

Rotor
Starting procedure:

• Voltage at solenoid switch

• Engaging lever pushes pinion onto ywheel

• Current from part of the winding also through

starter motor

Low output, simpler meshing

• Pinion engaged, switching contact closed

• Full battery voltage to starter motor

• One part of a winding bypassed

Starting procedure completed:

• Solenoid switch drops

• Starter motor de-energized

• Pinion returns to original position

Three-phase AC motor

Use of three-phase AC motors:

• In hybrid vehicles

• In plug-in hybrid vehicles

• In fuel cell or battery-electric vehicles

Requirements:

• High output

• Can be controlled accurately

• Robust and durable

Series circuit:

• Current in armature and excitation winding identical

Start-up:

• High current in both windings

• Strong magnetic elds, high torque

Increasing rotational speed:

• Lower armature current and excitation current

• Dropping torque

Suitable as starter motor

Parallel circuit

• Current in excitation winding independent from the current in the armature winding

• Permanent excitation eld

• Similar to permanent magnet motor

Alternating loads:

• Low levels of in uence on rotational speed

• Precise rpm control possible

Suitable for machine tools and traction drives
