Lesson 1.3 Blended Learning

Lesson Summary
Although generally seen as a 'trend' in 'progressive learning,' blended
learning can also be seen as a kind of relic symbolic of the gap between
'traditional education' (for the last century or so in brick-and-mortar schools
and classrooms) and connected and digital learning. This of course implies
that the future and the ultimate incarnation of learning, which is a short-
sighted view, are digital-only. But the point is that blended learning is as much
a mixture of old and new as it is a mixture of physical and digital learning.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Understand what is blended learning
2. Interpret situations in a class that applies blended learning. Motivation
Questions

What is Blended Learning? Does it mean, we are going to blend all our
strategy to form the best learning modality?

Introduction

We live in a time when Technology's changing just about everything in

our lives, with the exception of our schools, most especially in the case here
in the Philippines. Think about it, go back a hundred years, our schools don't
look that different than they do today and this factory model can result ins
one size fits none education, where the conveyor belt keeps going at the
same speed, resulting in a student dropping out of high school.
But during this pandemic we are currently facing right now, teachers
are now in place to learn about different learning modalities that they could
give to their students: Teachers find ways to let the students deserve better.
The students deserve an education they can personalize for their specific
needs so that all of them can realize their fullest potential and be prepared for
our post-factory economy. The concept of blended learning may have that
potential and the big idea here is to take the best of traditional schools and
blend it with the transformative power of online learning so that each student
gets a more personalized education that meets his or her needs. This is a
common misconception of the students that this learning modality only
focuses on online learning.
Leaders and educators have realized the power of blended learning to
create schools that are far more individualized, interactive, and ultimately
successful for our students.

What is Blended Learning?

Blended learning is a formal education program in which a student

learns at least in part through online learning, with some element of student
control over time, place, path, and/or pace;
The definition of Blended Learning can be divided into three main
items. Let's look at the definition. The first item is very straightforward. It
means that students study online The most important is the last part of the
definition. It means that not everyone has the same learning content and at
the same pace. The second item in the definition is also straightforward. It
means that online learning is conducted within the framework of school
education. This last part is important because learning online and having a
real classroom experience isn’t entirely disconnected from what is happening
in the class.
For example, Computer games for students. It means not letting them
play. In fact, learning online is linked to classroom activities. Classroom and
online must share content. Ideally, the teacher's observations and test results
combined with other information like a puzzle the two learning contents are
integrated into one.

Example 1
Students use tablets to answer a question the teacher poses to the
class
Interpretation
The student answers the teacher. Using a tablet may be more
efficient. This simply puts the machine in the classroom. It is not a BL, just a
digitalization of an old system.

Example 2
For homework, students watch a lecture on the 1986 People Power
Revolution. In class, students simulate Corazon Aquino’s speech.
Interpretation
The second case is BL. It’s basically using a technique called flip
classroom. It’s a lesson from Araling Panlipunan that shift to online video.
Students watch videos at their own pace at their convenience, pause, rewind,
review again if you do not understand. At school, we spend time deeply
engaging in our original learning. In order to extract much more meaning from
the experience. This is an important idea we want for BL. To make the
teaching method a little more efficient that may be possible to devote the free
time to more intense learning activities. The experience they get is a more
powerful learning experience, where teachers use technology.

Example 3
A teacher projects her lecture on a digital whiteboard and labels the
parts of the cell on the board while students take notes on laptops.

It’s great for teachers to use electronic blackboards. It is also great for
students to take notes on their computers. However, all of these were simply
made efficient by using machines in the classroom. It does not change the
basic roles of teachers and students. We are not aiming for more
individualized education. It just made the old system look good on the
machine. We do not call this example as a form of Blended Learning.

Let’s learn more!

Perhaps for a good starter, we can try adopting blended learning in our
classrooms. Blended learning modality is a mode of teaching combining the
traditional classroom setting combined with online learning. Moreover, there
is another important component of blended learning and that is structured
independent study time for the students. To date, there are some academic
institutions that are already implementing such modality. Some are slowly

transitioning. Perhaps this is a good way to test the effectiveness of

incorporating technology into the traditional classroom.
