Lesson 1.3
Lesson 1.3
Lesson Summary
Although generally seen as a 'trend' in 'progressive learning,' blended
learning can also be seen as a kind of relic symbolic of the gap between
'traditional education' (for the last century or so in brick-and-mortar schools
and classrooms) and connected and digital learning. This of course implies
that the future and the ultimate incarnation of learning, which is a short-
sighted view, are digital-only. But the point is that blended learning is as much
a mixture of old and new as it is a mixture of physical and digital learning.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Understand what is blended learning
2. Interpret situations in a class that applies blended learning. Motivation
Questions
What is Blended Learning? Does it mean, we are going to blend all our
strategy to form the best learning modality?

Example 1
Students use tablets to answer a question the teacher poses to the
class
Interpretation
The student answers the teacher. Using a tablet may be more
efficient. This simply puts the machine in the classroom. It is not a BL, just a
digitalization of an old system.
Example 2
For homework, students watch a lecture on the 1986 People Power
Revolution. In class, students simulate Corazon Aquino’s speech.
Interpretation
The second case is BL. It’s basically using a technique called flip
classroom. It’s a lesson from Araling Panlipunan that shift to online video.
Students watch videos at their own pace at their convenience, pause, rewind,
review again if you do not understand. At school, we spend time deeply
engaging in our original learning. In order to extract much more meaning from
the experience. This is an important idea we want for BL. To make the
teaching method a little more efficient that may be possible to devote the free
time to more intense learning activities. The experience they get is a more
powerful learning experience, where teachers use technology.
Example 3
A teacher projects her lecture on a digital whiteboard and labels the
parts of the cell on the board while students take notes on laptops.
It’s great for teachers to use electronic blackboards. It is also great for
students to take notes on their computers. However, all of these were simply
made efficient by using machines in the classroom. It does not change the
basic roles of teachers and students. We are not aiming for more
individualized education. It just made the old system look good on the
machine. We do not call this example as a form of Blended Learning.
Perhaps for a good starter, we can try adopting blended learning in our
classrooms. Blended learning modality is a mode of teaching combining the
traditional classroom setting combined with online learning. Moreover, there
is another important component of blended learning and that is structured
independent study time for the students. To date, there are some academic
institutions that are already implementing such modality. Some are slowly
