Normal Distribution Applications
The conversion of a random variable X with a normal distribution to a random
variable z with a standard normal distribution is called standardization.
E1 The random variable X has a normal distribution with 100 mean and 20
standard deviations. In this case, find the probabilities given below.
a) P( 60<x<100)
b) P(125<x<150)

standard deviations. In this case, find the probabilities given below.
a) P( 60<x<100)
b) P(125<x<150)
E2 The random variable X has a normal distribution with a mean of 11.22 and
a standard deviation of 2.68. In this case, find the probabilities given
below.
a) P( x<9.36)
b) P(x>10.58)

below.
a) P( x<9.36)
b) P(x>10.58)
E3 In a research conducted in a company, the duration of employees' use of the
Internet within 1 year is normally distributed with an average of 110 hours and a
standard deviation of 25 hours. What is the probability that a randomly selected
employee will use the internet in 1 year between 120-140 hours?
E4 The grades in an exam are normally distributed with a mean of 75 and 8
standard deviations. If the teacher gives AA to the grades over 90, what is the
number of students who took the exam since it is known that 12 students got
AA?
E5 As a result of research conducted by those working in a coal mine, they found
that the coals filled in sacks were distributed normally with a standard deviation
of 50 kg and 2 kg. Find the possibilites given below for a sack that is randomly
chosen;
a) More than 49 kg
b) Between 47 kg and 52 kg
c) Between 51 kg and 53 kg
Finding the proper z and x values for a normal distribution when
the probability value is known
1. Find the appropriate z value for the given probability value for the normal
distribution.
2. Calculate x via x = µ + zσ

E6 The continuous x random variable has a normal distribution with 15 means

and 3 standard deviations. Find the value of a since P (15 <x <a) = 0.1591.
E7 A continuous random variable x is normally distributed with a mean of 28.6 and a
standard deviation of 8.1.
a) P( x>a)=0.1, a=?
b) P(x<b)=0.15, b=?
E8 In a certain statistical exam, grades are normally distributed with a mean of 70
and 10 standard deviations. 5% of the students received AA. What is the
minimum grade required for a student to get AA?
E9 The average life of a particular type of small motor is 10 years with a standard
deviation of 2 years. The manufacturer replaces all failed engines free of charge
if they are under warranty. If the manufacturer wants to replace only 3% of the
failed engines for free, what is the warranty period for this product?
E10 One machine fills 24-ounce boxes with grain. The amount filled in the box is
suitable for normal distribution and its average is 24.8 ounces. What would
the standard deviation be for 96% of the boxes to contain 24 ounces or more?
Normal Distribution Approach to Binomial Distribution

With the binomial model, it becomes difficult to calculate when the value of n
is too large. When the number of trials is large and np.≥ 5 and nq≥5, the
binomial probabilities can be approximated to the normal distribution. For this,

1. µ=n.p

2. 𝜎 = 𝑛𝑝𝑞

3. Continuity correction is made by adding a value of ± 0.5 to X..

P(x-0.5≤ x ≤x+0.5)

4. After the z value is found by using the corrected values, the standard
normal distribution table is used.
E11 The discrete x random variable has a binomial distribution with n = 35 and
p = 0.55. What is the probability value of P (X≥23)?
E12 It is known that 15% of the products of a company are defective due to
malfunction. When 300 products are selected randomly
a) If 50 or less items are defective
b) What is the possibility that between 30 and 40 items are defective?
