What is Communication?
COMMUNICATION
Comes from Latin word communis, meaning commonness.
A two-way process by which information is exchanged
between or among individuals through a common system of
symbols, signs and behavior.
Communication occurs between two or more people (the
speaker and the receiver).
Communication can be expressed through written or
spoken words,(verbal) actions (nonverbal), or both
spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same time.
COMMUNICATION
Communication is a process of sharing and conveying
messages or information from one person to another
within and across channels, contexts, media, and
cultures (McCornack, 2014).
Rogers states that communication is the process of
transmitting ideas, information, and attitudes from the
source to a receiver for the purpose of influencing
with intent.
Kar visions communication as all those planned or
unplanned processes through which one person influences
the behavior of others.
COMMUNICATION
Berelson and Steiner explain communication as the
transmission of information, ideas, and emotions,
skills through the use of symbols, words, pictures,
figures, and graphs.
Schramm states communication is a tool that makes
societies possible and distinguishes human from other
societies.
VERBAL AND NONVERBAL
COMMUNICATION
VERBAL COMMUNICATION is the transmission of
ideas, opinions, feelings/ emotions or attitudes
through the use of words (comments, questions,
reactions). It can be oral or written.
NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION refers to the sending
of messages to another person utilizing methods
or means other than words (facial expression,
gesture, eye contact).

1. SPEAKER – the source of information or message.

2. MESSAGE – the information, ideas, or thoughts
conveyed by the speaker in words or in actions.
ENCODING – the process of converting the message into
words, actions, or other form that the speaker
understands.

3. CHANNEL – the medium or the means, such as
personal or non-personal, verbal or nonverbal, in
which the encoded message is conveyed.

4. RECEIVER – the recipient of the message, or
someone who decodes the message.
DECODING – the process of interpreting the
encoded message of the speaker by the receiver.
5. FEEDBACK – the reaction, or information
provided by the receiver.
6. CONTEXT/SITUATION – the environment where
communication takes place.
7. BARRIER/NOISE – the factors that affect the
flow of communication.

STEPS OF COMMUNICATION PROCESS
(1) The speaker GENERATES an idea. ➔ (2) The speaker ENCODES an
idea or converts the idea into words or actions. ➔ (3) The speaker
TRANSMITS or sends out a message. ➔ (4) The receiver GETS the
message. ➔ (5) The receiver DECODES or interprets the message based on
the context. ➔ (6) The receiver sends or PROVIDES FEEDBACK.
