Y8 Chemistry Exam 2023.
The Year 8 Chemistry Exam will take place on the 28th June 2023 and
there will be questions on the following topics
Elements compounds and Mixtures
Metals and their chemistry
The exam will be 45 minutes long.
Getting ready to do your best in your exam
Included in this booklet are revision lists to help you to plan what you need to
learn (all notes for these topics should be in your exercise books and revision
guides), revision exercises and practice exam questions so you can prepare
well for your Chemistry exam.
There is also a QR code on the revision list which you can use to take you straight
to BBC Bitesize online revision.
Your teacher will also go through what to revise before the holidays and you will have
some revision time in lessons.
Elements compounds and mixtures
Classify simple materials as either having one or more components
Sort materials according to whether they dissolve or not
Describe how some mixtures can be separated
Describe the results of separation experiments in everyday terms eg.
Chromatography different colours come from one colour
Recognise that when a solid dissolves it does not disappear e.g sea
water tastes salty
Describe the difference between element, mixture and compound.
Recognise symbols of common elements
Identify the elements in simple compounds from simple formulae
Recognise the positions of elements in the periodic table
Select the correct separation technique for familiar substances
Recognise that dissolving is a reversible change
Explain what a saturated solution is
Explain the terms solute and solvent
To understand different solutes have different solubilities in different
solvents
Explain the processes involved in the separation techniques e.g. why
solids can’t pass through filter paper
Use the idea of particles to explain dissolving e.g. the particles of a
solid spread out among the particles of a liquid
Use the particle model to explain how chromatography works
Explain choice of separation technique re. particle model
Explain the separation of liquids of different boiling points using
distillation
Describe elements, mixtures and compounds in terms of atoms
Use a particle model to explain what happens during a chemical
reaction
Explain why properties of compounds are different from constituent
elements
Metals and their reactions
Identify some of the characteristics of metals
Describe the appearance of some metals e.g. grey, shiny
Describe observations of chemical reactions e.g. it fizzed
Identify when a chemical reaction takes place
Describe a chemical reaction as new materials being formed
Name some metals and their features and uses
Describe the test for hydrogen and carbon dioxide
Describe the reaction of metals with oxygen and water
Describe features of metals re. high melting points, good conductors
Explain some everyday uses of metals and link it to their reactivity
Identify differences in the reactivity of different metals
Represent reactions using word equations
Arrange common metals in order of reactivity
Use the reactivity series to predict the outcome of displacement
reactions involving metals and carbon
Identify metals that can occur naturally
Describe how metals can be extracted, including Iron and Aluminium
Metals and their reactions
Classify hydrogen as a gas
Describe a simple feature of acids e.g. sour
Identify when a chemical reaction takes place
Describe a chemical reaction as new materials being formed
Describe the test for hydrogen and carbon dioxide
Recognise the “fizz” in a reaction as a gas being given off
Describe what a neutral solution is
Name some common laboratory acids and alkalis
Name an indicator and describe simply how it works eg. Turns red in
acid
Describe the reaction of metals with acids and water
Name some common salts
Explain chemical reactions in terms of new products being made and
/or energy changes taking place
Represent reactions using word equations
Describe the reactions between acids and metal oxides and carbonates
Construct the names of salts given the reactants
Explain a word equation for neutralisation
Use the reactivity series to predict the outcome of reactions involving
metals
Use the idea of conservation of mass during a chemical reaction to
make a prediction

Q1.The word equation for the reaction between magnesium carbonate and hydrochloric
acid is shown below.
magnesium + hydrochloric → magnesium + carbon + water
carbonate acid chloride dioxide
(a) Sadiq added hydrochloric acid to magnesium carbonate in a flask.
(i) Suggest the pH of hydrochloric acid.
..................
(ii) The carbon dioxide produced was bubbled through lime water.
How would the lime water change?
................................................................................................................

(b) Sadiq repeated the experiment by adding sulphuric acid to magnesium carbonate.
Complete the word equation for the reaction that took place.
magnesium + sulphuric → ................................................ + carbon + water
carbonate acid dioxide

(c) Sadiq made a model volcano.
He put magnesium carbonate into the model.
He added vinegar and a drop of washing-up liquid.
The mixture fizzed, and froth poured out of the model volcano.
(i) The vinegar reacted with the magnesium carbonate.
Suggest the pH of vinegar.
.............
(ii) The froth running down the side of the model represents part of a real
volcano.
Give the name of this part.

Q2.
Jill bought a can of Wax Seal to spray the parts underneath her car.
Wax Seal helps to prevent these parts rusting.
It is a mixture of wax and a liquid called white spirit.
(a) (i) The body of Jill’s car is made from steel. Steel contains iron.
Give two substances that are needed for iron to rust.
