And their message is an

MOTHERLY LOVE
“My mother would say she

“There weren’t that many
times when her mum actually
held her.
“She spent the first part of
my mum’s life dancing her
way around the world with
other people, and the last
part of her life dedicating
herself to the world in a very
different way.
“She recognised her skill
set, her contacts list and
the advantages of money,
and was able to do some
incredible things.”
It was on one of her world
trips that Edwina deposited
her two daughters, Lady P
and her elder sister, Lady
Patricia, in a hotel in Hungary
for six months, only to forget
the location.
“They were finding some-
where in Europe to leave the
girls and found a nice-looking
hotel.
“It was possibly careless,
losing the address,” says
India, wryly, “but my mum
wouldn’t see it as being
abandoned.
“She said she had a
marvellous relationship with
the governess and nanny, and
her sister looked after her.
But our generation think it’s
appalling.”
Princess Elizabeth was a
regular visitor to Lady P’s
home, Broadlands in Romsey,
Hampshire, with her sister
Princess Margaret, often
coming for riding weekends.
“My father was a second

myself, Patricia, the Queen

ever met – he was dazzling
and extraordinary and
opened her eyes to a world of
design that she’d never

“He was very good-looking
but impossible, and like many
marriages, it was a
rollercoaster.”
He also wasn’t the type
of man her mother was
supposed to marry. “He was
definitely unexpected. But by
then, my mother’s life was so
unexpected, as she’d had so
many different experiences.
“While she was in India,
all her friends were getting
married to sensible Dukes of
68 big estates. By the time she
came back to England, she
found it hard to adjust.”
ON TOUR WITH THE ROYALS
Lady Pamela was a bridesmaid at Princess Elizabeth’s
wedding in 1947 and a lady-in-waiting for two
Commonwealth tours – in 1952, when the Princess was told
in Kenya of the death of her father, George VI, and in 1953,
when this picture was taken.
She had been given strict instructions from Queen Mary
to address her friend as “Princess Elizabeth” and “Ma’am”
and never “Lilibet” in her new role. However, she didn’t
always follow protocol. Remembering the moment when
Elizabeth learnt of her father’s death, she says: “I
instinctively gave her a hug, but quickly remembering that
she was now Queen, I dropped to a deep curtsy.”
Five months after the coronation, the Queen and Prince
Philip embarked on a six-month Commonwealth tour. “I
would hold her handbag if she had to present new colours
to a regiment, and when she met well-wishers, I was to take
the bouquets that she could not hold,” says Lady P, who
also replied to “huge amounts” of unofficial correspondence.

REFLECTING ON THE TOUGH ASPECTS OF MOTHERHOOD
HALLE BERRY
REVEALS HOW SHE GOT INTO THE HEAD OF A
TROUBLED MUM IN HER TERRIFYING NEW ROLE
A s a busy working mother of
two children, Halle Berry
knows the pressures the job
entails. After all, the 58-year-old
star is raising Nahla, 16, and
Maceo-Robert, 11, as a single
parent, meaning all the decision-
making falls on her shoulders –
and she is well aware of the
responsibilities that brings.
“I battle almost daily with
decisions I have to make,” she
says. “I ask myself: ‘Is this the right
thing to do? Is this the best for my
child? Am I doing better than
what was done for me? Am I
breaking the generational trauma
cycles of my growing? Am I doing
exactly what my mother did?’
“I think that’s very relatable,
especially for other mothers and
other women.”
The actress, who worked her
way to the top of Hollywood with
roles in hit films such as Swordfish
and Monster’s Ball – for which she
became the first African-American
woman to win an Academy Award
for Best Actress in 2002 – is
now one of the industry’s most
bankable stars.

TOUGH LOVE
The character she plays is, she
says, a complex one. “Her
complications run really deep.
She is a fierce mama bear and
she’s trying to take care of her
children the best way she can,
but she’s also trying to hold on to
her sanity.
“Because of that, she’s forced to
make decisions and do things that
don’t always feel motherly, but they
are what she needs to do to survive
and take care of her children.
“She’s tortured. I think she

technically, what she’s doing is
torturing them too.”
To prepare for the role, Halle
did a lot of research. “I studied
schizophrenia, because I feel that
Momma is not quite mentally
sound,” she says.
“Whether she’s suffering from
schizophrenia after ten years in
the middle of nowhere, she’s
pretty limited in her ability to
express herself and to function, so
how does that affect a normally
functioning person?”
Although the story is terrifying,
Halle understands why movie-
goers still love horror films. “You
like to scare yourself in the safe
environment of a movie theatre,
right? Because you know it’s not
real, but you get to go on this
journey as if it might be.
“You are going to get a story
that has heart. You’re going to
love the heart of this family, the
struggle that they’re facing. I
think you’ll connect to Momma,”
she says.

a gap in the market for the ancient Indian art
