Say Your Hello!

‘Hi’ and ‘Hello’ are the most common English greetings used when you meet people, but
there are other options that you could choose to make your English sound better. Here are some
other English greetings that you could say depending on the time of the day:

✓ Good morning! /12.00 am to 12.00 pm/

✓ Good afternoon! /12.00 pm to 06.00 pm/
✓ Good evening! /06.00 pm to bed time/
You can also say ‘hi’ or ’hello’ which is directly followed by other greeting expressions:

✓ Hi, good morning! 00

✓ Hello, good afternoon! 00
✓ Hi, everyone! Good evening!

When someone says ‘hi’ or ’hello’ to you, you are supposed to exactly respond with the same
greetings they say to you. Look at the table below!

Greeting Expressions Responses

Hi/Hello! Hi/Hello!

Good morning! Good morning!

Good afternoon! Good afternoon!

Good evening! Good evening!

Start a Small Talk!

After greeting someone, you may want to start a small talk to help you escape from an
awkward situation between you and someone you say hello to. By asking ‘How are you?’, it
probably could help you to deal with it and keep your conversation going.

There are various expressions to ask about how someone is and

know what they feel. Here are some common examples:
✓ How are you?
✓ How are you doing?
✓ How are things (with you)?

The common answers for the question ‘How are you?’

are various depending on the situation you feel at the present
time. Your answer may be positive, neutral, or negative.
However, it is not easy to know what exactly someone feels
from their quick answers. We also need to pay attention to the
intonation to be sure about what the interlocutor intended to
say.

Greeting Expressions Positive Responses Neutral Responses Negative Responses

How are you? I am good. All right. Not really well.

How are you doing? I am doing well. Fine. Not doing okay.

How are things with

Everything is great. Not bad. Been better.
you?

After giving an answer, it is polite to add ‘thanks’ afterwards. It will be more polite if you
could ask the person back. You could say ‘Thank you! How about you?’ or just simply say ‘Thanks!
And you?’.
You can also keep your conversation going with these various effective ways; asking for
the interlocutor’s information, paying her/him a compliment, or even introducing yourself (If only
you and the one you are talking to don’t know each other).
 Hello English 

Introduce Yourself

To indroduce yourself means to tell someone who you are and all information related to
yourself. Since you have learned how to greet someone and how to say goodbye, you need to
learn as well how to do a proper self-introduction because it is a very basic language skill that you
will do repeatedly everytime you meet new people.
Here are some expressions to learn:

I am _____________________.

Name : My name is _____________________.

You can call me _____________________.

I am _____________________.
Age :
I am _____________________ years old.

I am from _____________________.
I come from _____________________.
Address :
I live in _____________________.
I live at _____________________.

I study at _____________________.

Occupation : I am a student of _____________________.

I am in grade _____________________.

In addition, you may also include any other information to make your introduction more
interesting. You may talk about something you like or dislike or something you prefer or avoid
doing such as dreams, hobbies, principles and etc.
 Hello English 
An Intermediate Gateway to English World
To make you understand, read the following introduction examples:

Jace Gilbert
Hello! My name is Jace Gilbert. You can call me Jace. I am 13 years old.
I am from America. I live at Ma’had. Now, I am a student of Perguruan Islam
Mathali’ul Falah.
I am studying in grade 7. I like sport very much. I play basketball very
often because I want to be a good basketball athlete one day. Nice to meet you!

Zena Emad
Hi! I am Zena Emad. Just call me Zena. I am 12 y.o. I
am from Lebanon. I live in Bulumanis with my family. We have
just moved here. I go to Perguruan Islam Mathali’ul Falah
everyday. I am in grade 7.

I am so excited being here in Indonesia. The food

are surprisingly delicious. But I don’t really like Sambal. It is
too spicy for me.

Nur Hasan
Hello, everyone! My name is Nur Hasan. But, my family and
friends call me Aan. I am now 12 years old. I come from Jogjakarta.
I now live in Kajen with my uncle.
I study at PIM. I want to seek my higher education overseas.
That is why I need to study English very well. That’s all about me.
Thanks!

Those are some short examples to introduce yourself properly. You

need to compose and practice your own self introduction in the next exercise.
But there are some language notes that you should pay attention to. Read carefully and avoid
using these common mistakes:
1. “I am from” is a general expression that can be followed by any places you are originated from.
2. “I come from” is only used to describe that the place where you belong is quite far and requires a
little bit journey to be in the place in which you are currently introducing yourself.
3. When you want to say where you live in general, use “I live in” then followed with village, town,
city, country, and etc.
4. When you want to mention where you live spesificly, use “I live at” then followed with the name
of places, Ma’had, institution, and etc.
5. Do not say “I study in Mathali’ul Falah” since you already talk about a spesific name of a certain
school. Say “I study at Mathali’ul Falah” instead.
6. “I think enough” is an incorrect expression to end your talk. Probably, you can use “that’s all” as
a closing expression.
 Hello English 

Say Your Goodbye!

When it is considered rude to say nothing when meeting people, it is also rude to leave
them without saying a goodbye. Politeness is fundamental. You may be familiar enough with
‘goodbye’/’bye-bye’/’bye’ expressions. You normally use them to end all conversations. But they
are not the only ways to say goodbye in English.

In fact, on some occasions, it will seem strange or sound unnatural if you say one of those
3 expressions to end your conversation. Here are some easy farewell expressions for you to
remember:
✓ See you!
✓ See you soon/later/around!
✓ Good to see you!
✓ Talk to you later!
✓ Take care!
Nice talking to Okay! See you
you too! around then!
I have to go now. It
was nice talking to
you, guys!

There are two kinds of verb. The former is called ‘transitive verb’ and the latter is named
‘intransitive verb’. A transitive verb requires an object. On the other hand, an intransitive verb
has a subject but no object. Let’s study the following illustrations!
