I have contributed in the setting up for the division of GI and HPB surgery at Tata Medical Center.
I joined this hospital in September 2010 during its construction phase along with my senior colleague
Dr. Manas Kumar Roy. Over past 8 years we developed the department into its present shape. I was
involved with the purchase of instruments, protocol formulation, training of surgical fellows and
paramedical staffs. Almost single handedly I have set up the hospital digital library. Later in the
course, Dr. Robin Thambudorai (Upper GI and Thoracic services) and Prof. V. Sitaram (HPB services)
joined the department. MIS and Robotic surgery program has also been initiated in August 2017.
We have plans to initiate liver transplantation program.
TMC is a 165 bedded comprehensive cancer hospital (www.tmckolkata.com). There is a huge
demand for such a hospital in this part of the country. It was inaugurated on 16th May 2011
and is fully operational. An extension has been planned which will be completed in 2018 upon
which another 250 beds will be added. A dedicated research facility close to the hospital is also
being envisaged.
On 10th March 2016, we performed our 100th Whipple operation. We audited, and later,
presented our data of ‘one hundred’ such consecutive operations. This reinforced our belief
that we can, and should, sub-specialize. The proposed HPB unit will have the following
mission:
1. To minimize the mortality from pancreatic resection to < 2%
2. To increase minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) HPB procedures
3. Plan to start liver transplantation
Between June 2011-May 2018, the GI unit has had 4,068 in-patient admissions while 48,963
patients have been seen in its out-patients clinic. In 2017, amongst the various surgical units,
the Breast and GI Surgery are the only two units which have seen more than 10,000 patients in
their respective OPD.
Personal
I have a lovely twelve year old daughter, Aaratrika. I missed her a lot when I was in Vellore for
my training. I enjoy spending time with her. My wife, Sanchari, is an Assistant Professor of
Psychiatry (MD) at a government medical college. Both of them love music and singing. I also
enjoy painting, gardening and traveling and photography. I like watching sports, especially
football, although I don’t get a lot of time to indulge myself.
