Research Activities

The regulatory research program sponsored by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
addresses issues in the three arenas of nuclear reactors, nuclear materials, and radioactive waste.
The research program is designed to improve the agency's knowledge where uncertainty exists,
where safety margins are not well-characterized, and where regulatory decisions need to be
confirmed in existing or new designs and technologies. The NRC's annual Regulatory Information
Conference (RIC) provides a forum for presentations and discussions about the agency's research
activities. Information gained from the research program is documented in our NUREG-series
publications and is used in developing regulatory guides. Some of these publications provide
documentation and information on the use of technical computer codes that are used in research,
modelling, and analysis.

Radioactive Material Security

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Agreement States regulate the use of radioactive
material in order to protect people and the environment. Material licensees have the primary
responsibility to maintain the security and accountability of the radioactive material in their
possession. While the events of September 11, 2001 put new emphasis on security to prevent the
malicious use of radioactive material, such as in dirty bombs, the NRC continues to work with its
Federal and State partners, as well as with the international community, to provide appropriate
safety and security requirements for radioactive materials without discouraging their beneficial use.

In regulating the design, siting, construction, and operation of new commercial nuclear power
facilities, the NRC employs a combination of regulatory requirements, licensing, and oversight. The
NRC considers public involvement in the agency's activities to be a cornerstone of strong, fair
regulation of the nuclear industry. Toward that end, our regulatory process provides a variety of
opportunities for citizens to be heard.

How the NRC Protects You

Radiation and its risks command considerable public attention. However, over many decades, the
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has developed a system of radiation protection that
reflects the world's improved understanding of the effects of radiation. In particular, the NRC ensures
that users of radioactive materials keep radiation exposures within the agency's specified dose limits
and as low as reasonably achievable. In addition, users must obtain a license from the NRC and be
inspected to ensure that they are following the agency's regulations and safely using radioactive
materials. The following links provide information regarding specific aspects of radiation protection
in industrial and medical applications and at nuclear power plants:

Japan : Amidst regional tensions and potential arms races, does Japan foresee a strategic decision to
remain non-nuclear, and how does it strengthen non-proliferation frameworks in Asia?

Japan strongly supports international non-proliferation measures and the Joint Comprehensive Plan
of Action (JCPOA) for Iran, while expressing concerns over North Korea's nuclear activities. How does
Japan balance its pacifist constitution with its active role in international non-proliferation efforts?

India : How does India's refusal to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) align with its commitment
to nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament
