1 INTRODUCTION
Dear Student

This module is presented as an open and distance learning (ODL) course. Access to a
computer, the internet and myUnisa is essential.

This tutorial letter contains important information about the scheme of work required. Note this
module does not have a formal venue-based (sit-down) examination at the end of the year.
Rather, a portfolio-based approach is followed.

Please note that this course does not make use of the myUnisa forums, but the INF4820 forum
available at http://osprey.unisa.ac.za/forums (known as the Osprey forums). We use these
forums since they are more user-friendly than the myUnisa forums. If you have any course-
related queries, please make use of this forum. Register with your myLife email and any
password of your choice.

Please download and read tutorial Letter 301 which contains important general information. All
follow-up tutorial letters will be published on myUnisa in the Additional Resources folder.

The website for your module is INF4820-23-Y1.

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES

2.1 Purpose

The purpose of this module is to enable students to be able to demonstrate knowledge about
Human Computer Interaction concepts and principles relating to measuring the user
experience. Specifically, the tools and techniques (methodologies) and criteria for measuring
the user experience in different contexts.
2.2 Outcomes

For this module, there are three outcomes that we hope you will be able to accomplish by the
end of the course:

Specific outcome 1: be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic constructs of

usability evaluation.

Specific outcome 2: be able to differentiate and apply different kinds of usability metrics
including performance, issue-based, self-reported, behavioural, and psychological metrics.

Specific outcome 3: be able to conduct usability and user experience evaluation including the
collecting, analysing, and presenting of usability metrics.

3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION
Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In
response to this charter, we have placed curriculum transformation high on the teaching and
learning agenda. Curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred
3

lOMoARcPSD|8084714

scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of
teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These
pillars and their principles will be integrated at both programme and module levels as a phased-
in approach. You will notice a marked change in the teaching and learning strategy
implemented by Unisa, together with how the content is conceptualised in your modules. We
encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa in a responsive way
within the framework of transformation.

6.1 First-Year Experience Programme @ Unisa

For many students, the transition from school education to tertiary education is beset with
anxiety. This is also true for first-time students to Unisa. Unisa is a dedicated open distance and
e-learning institution. Unlike face-to-face/contact institutions, Unisa is somewhat different. It is a
mega university, and all our programmes are offered through a blended learning mode or fully
online learning mode. It is for this reason that we thought it necessary to offer first-time students
additional/extended support so that you can seamlessly navigate the Unisa teaching and
learning journey with little difficulty and few barriers. In this regard, we offer a specialised
student support programme to students entering Unisa for the first time. We refer to this
programme as Unisa’s First-Year Experience (FYE) Programme. The FYE is designed to
provide you with prompt and helpful information about services that the institution offers and
how you can access information. The following FYE programmes are currently offered:

• FYE website: All the guides and resources you need to navigate through your first year at
Unisa can be accessed using the following link: www.unisa.ac.za/FYE

• FYE e-mails: You will receive regular e-mails to help you stay focused and motivated.

• FYE broadcasts: You will receive e-mails with links to broadcasts on various topics related
to your first-year studies (eg videos on how to submit assignments online).

• FYE mailbox: For assistance with queries related to your first year of study, send an e-mail
to [email protected]

7. HOW TO STUDY ONLINE

7.1 What does it mean to study fully online?

Studying fully online modules differs completely from studying some of your other modules at
Unisa.

• All your study material and learning activities for online modules are designed to be
delivered online on myUnisa.
• All your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you will do all your
activities and submit all your assignments on myUnisa. In other words, you may NOT post
your assignments to Unisa using the South African Post Office.
• All communication between you and the University happens online. Lecturers will
communicate with you via e-mail and SMS, and use the Announcements, and the
Discussion Forums tools.

8 STUDY PLAN
A portfolio is “a physical compilation of student work assembled for the purpose of (1)
evaluating coursework quality and academic achievement, (2) creating a lasting archive of
academic work products, and (3) determining whether students have met the minimum learning
standards or academic requirements to pass the module. This contrasts with an examination,
which reflects only what a student knows at a specific point in time” (e-glossary.org, 2015).

9 PRACTICAL WORK
The portfolio you will complete consists of three parts (and therefore three separate
submissions). Parts 1 and 2 will be submitted as Assignments 1 and 2. You will find these
assignments in tutorial letters 102 and 103. Tutorial letter 102 will be available in the Additional
Resources folder on myUnisa from 1 February 2023. Part 3 will be submitted as Assignment 3
and will be made available in tutorial letter 104. Tutorial letters 103 and 104 will only be made
available after the release of assignment 1 and assignment 2 results. Note that in Unisa
language, Assignments 1 and 2 are referred to as "assignments" and Assignment 3 is referred
to as the "portfolio". The reason for this is that the electronic assignment system was not
designed to cater for portfolios "as a compilation of separate parts". In this course, we use the
term "assignment" throughout.

10 ASSESSMENT
10.1 Assessment criteria

Specific outcome 1: Demonstrate an understanding of user experience concepts

Assessment criteria
• Discourse about uses of user experience evaluation indicates understanding of the
various application areas of user experience systems.

• Answers to questions about the user experience of systems indicate understanding of

user experience systems.

Downloaded by Ntombikayise Anele Xaba ([email protected])

lOMoARcPSD|8084714

• Discourse on foundational user experience systems demonstrates an understanding of

their purpose and meaning in the context

• Answers to questions about evaluation approaches, terminologies and knowledge

representation indicate an understanding of different philosophical views of user
experience evaluation.

Specific outcome 2: Critically analyse and evaluate existing user experience systems in
terms of usability.

Assessment criteria
• Analysis of given user experience systems demonstrates an understanding of the
purpose of its constituent parts and their meaning.

Specific outcome 3: Demonstrate an understanding of the methodologies for evaluating

the user experience of systems

Assessment criteria
• Discourse on user experience measurement criteria show an understanding of the
basic metrics at play.

• Discussion of evaluation methods shows an understanding of their purpose and

applicability.

Specific outcome 4: Apply development tools to develop new user experience systems
and adapt existing ones

Assessment criteria
• Small-scale user experience systems or fragments of user experience systems are
created using ontology development tools. Techniques and methodologies of ontology
engineering are applied appropriately.

• Existing user experience systems or ontology fragments are analysed and improved.
Techniques and methodologies of ontology engineering are applied appropriately.
10.2 Assessment plan

Calculation of your year mark and final mark is as follows:

• Year mark = 40% (Assignment 1= 40% + Assignment 2 = 60%).

• Portfolio mark = 60%.

You must obtain a final mark of 50% or more to pass this module.

10.3 Assignment numbers

• No assignment due dates are included in this tutorial letter.

• Assignment due dates will be made available to you on the landing page of myUnisa for this
module. We envisage that the due dates will be available to you upon registration.

• Log on to the myUnisa site for this module to obtain more information on the due dates for
the submission of the assignments

10.4 Assignment due dates

• Modules offered by Unisa are either blended (meaning that we use a combination of printed
and online material to engage with you) or online (all information is available via the
internet). In all cases of online engagement, we use myUnisa as our virtual campus.

• From 2022, the myUnisa virtual campus is offered via a new learning management system.
This is an online system that is used to administer, document, and deliver educational
material to you and support engagement with you.

• Look out for information from your lecturer as well as other Unisa platforms to determine
how to access the virtual myUnisa module site.

• Information on the tools that will be available to engage with the lecturer and fellow students
to support your learning will also be communicated via various platforms.

• The University undertakes to communicate as clearly and as frequently as is necessary to

ensure optimum advantage in the use of the new learning management system.

• Additional information on the use of the myUnisa site for the module, as well as features to
engage and communicate with your lecturer and other students, will also be made available
via the online site for the module.

• Therefore, log on to the myUnisa site for your module to gain more information on where to
complete and/or upload your assignments and how to communicate with your lecturer.

following:

• Cutting and pasting from any source without acknowledging the source.
• Not including or using incorrect references.
• Paraphrasing without acknowledging the original source of the information.

11.2 Cheating
Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Completing assessments on behalf of another student, copying from another student during
an assessment or allowing a student to copy from you.
• Using social media (e.g., WhatsApp, Telegram) or other platforms to disseminate
assessment information.
• Submitting corrupt or irrelevant files.
• Buying completed answers from “tutors” or internet sites (contract cheating).
