BRIEF
INTRODUCTION

• A healthy community is described as a place that is safe and clean and has improved
overall health and quality of life for group of individuals living in the same area. There is
a sense of belongingness and people live harmoniously and peacefully together.

Some essential characteristics of a healthy school or community

1. The school must be a safe and healthy learning environment.

Healthy food selections are available and promoted all over the school. The canteen
must be clean and sanitized. Eating good foods in a healthy environment is essential to
promote learning.
2. The school or community must have access to quality and up to date health care
resources.
Members of the school and community have access to educational programs that
provide adequate preparation in health.
Medical and dental services are available to support the school or community with
adequate facilities and supplies to support the population.
3. There is a health-minded administration.
There is a commitment and cooperation from the administration and staff to implement
all school policies regarding health. The school creates its own policies to support healthy
choices and a healthier environment for the welfare of every member of the community.
Health topics are integrated into other subject areas. Teachers understand the issues
affecting the learners, and have the skills and confidence to teach about sensitive yet
important issues. The school community organizes or promotes health, like intramurals,
drug awareness campaigns, fun run, and health week.
4. The community dynamically participates in the activities.
5. The building should be constructed using safe materials.
It should be free from asbestos and other hazardous materials. The paint used in the
school and the community must be lead-free. Special attention has to be given to clean
restrooms and food service areas to comply with sanitation standards.
6. Clean drinking water has to be made available throughout the school.
Water needs to be checked periodically by government accredited water testing
facilities.
7. Air quality and good ventilation is also a major concern.
Classroom must have adequate cooling and ventilation for the comfort and safety of the
teachers and learners. Regular testing of air quality must be observed and administered
by accredited testing facilities.
8. Science laboratories must be properly labeled, classified, and securely stored to avoid
accidents. Arrangement of the overall ad poster illustrates visual weight.

Young people gain knowledge and skills focused on health promotion more likely to develop
as productive adults. Health and wellness within the school community need to become a
way of life. https://www.schools4health.com/school-health-models/benefits-of-

What is the relationship of School and Community?

School- a place where formal learning takes place.

Community – a group of people living together in each place that share common

Are you happy in a place where you are living right now? Do you have different
resources in your community?

Every one of us that are living in a community plays different role whether in making it
healthy or not.

In this module you will learn the definition of a healthy community, the resources that
we (you) can utilize in making it more sustainable for a living. And also, you will learn what
could be the effect of living in a healthy community.
One important part of the community, which has great influence, direct supervision and control
over our youth in particular, is the school. It teaches the importance of health education and
lifelong skills.

In this lesson, you will learn that as responsible members of your respective communities, you can
build and maintain a healthy school environment.

SOME WAYS TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT IN SCHOOL

1. Making Plant Boxes
When there is not enough space with good soil for planting, one alternative is to use plant
boxes to make mini-garden inside the school.

2. Waste Segregation

Waste segregation means sorting waste into different categories to make disposal easier. It
can be segregated as wet or dry, biodegradable or non-biodegradable.
3. Raising environmental awareness

Some practices which some schools and communities already do are;

✓ conducting slogan making contest, jingle making contest and on the spot painting contest
✓ giving awards to classes involved in the beautification, and cleanliness within the school
✓ making announcements regarding local government units initiatives to which the school
can participate.
