WORKSHEET-1

PAIR OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Q.1. Solve the following pair of linear equations by the substitution

method.

(i) x + y = 14 ; x – y = 4 (ii) 3x – y = 3; 9x – 3y = 9

Q.2. Show graphically that each one of the following systems of

equations has infinitely many solutions.

(i) 2x + 3y = 6; 4x + 6y = 12 (ii) 3x + y = 8; 6x + 2y = 16

Q.3. Show graphically that each one of the following systems of

equations is in-consistent (i.e., has no solution).

(i) 3x – 5y = 20; 6x – 10y = – 40 (ii) 2y – x = 9; 6y – 3x = 21

Q.4. Find the value of k for which the following system of equations
has a unique solution:

(i) kx + 2y = 5; 3x + y = 1 (ii) 4x – 5y = k; 2x – 3y = 12

Q.5. Find the value of k for which each of the following systems of
equations having infinitely many solutions.

(ii) 2x + 3y – 5 = 0; 6x + ky – 15 = 0 (ii) kx + 3y = 2k + 1; 2(k+1)x

+ 9y = 7k + 1

Q.6. 7(y + 3) – 2(x + 2) = 14; 4(y – 2) + 3(x – 3) = 2

Q.7. 3 bags and 4 pens together cost ₹ 257, whereas 4 bags and 3
pens together cost ₹324. Find the total cost of 1 bag and 10 pens.

Q.8. A number consists of two digits whose sum is five. When the
digits are reversed, the number becomes greater by nine. Find the
number.
Q.9. Jamila sold a table and a chair for ₹ 1050, thereby making a
profit of 10% on the table and 25% on the chair. If she had taken a
profit of 25% on the table and 10% on the chair, she would have
got ₹ 1065. Find the cost price of each.

Q.10. A is elder than B by 2 years. A’s father, F, is twice as old as A,

and B is twice as old as his sister S. If the age of the father and sister
differ by 40 years, find the age of A.

Q.11. Points A and B are 70km. apart on a highway. A car starts from
A, and another car starts from B simultaneously. If they travel in the
same direction, they meet in 7hrs, but if they travel towards each
other, they meet in one hour. Find the speed of two cars.

Q.12. The boat goes 30km upstream and 44km downstream in 10

hours. In 13 hours, it can go 40km upstream and 55km downstream.
Determine the speed of the stream and that of the boat in still water.

Q.13. Yash scored 40 marks in a test, getting 3 marks for each right
answer and losing 1 mark for each wrong answer. Had 4 marks been
awarded for each correct answer and 2 marks been deducted for
each incorrect answer, then Yash would have scored 50 marks. How
many questions were there in the test ?

Q.14. In a ΔABC, ∠A = xo, ∠B = 3xo, ∠C = yo. If 3y – 5x = 30, prove

that the triangle is right-angled.

Q.15. The car hire charges in a city comprise of fixed charges

together with the charge for the distance covered. For a journey of
12 km, the charge paid is ₹ 89, and for a journey of 20 km, the
charge paid is ₹ 145. What will a person have to pay for travelling a
distance of 30 km?
