Renewal of NIE – 2nd and subsequent years

1. When do I renew my NIE?

NIE renewals can only be presented in the period between 60 days immediately prior to the
NIE expiry date.
Applications more than 60 days prior to the NIE expiry date are not accepted.

2. Where do I submit the renewal documents?

Previously you could go to any Foreigners Office (Extraneria in Spanish) and submit your
paperwork without having to make an appointment. However recently the system was
changed and an appointment must be made. To make an appointment click this link and select
“Registro de documentación”.
The only responsibility of the personnel there is to receive the documents, so most likely they
won´t be able to answer any specific questions regarding timeframe or what documents are
needed. This is why it is necessary to take all of the required documents, original and a copy.

3. What do I need to take with me for the 1st appointment?

Documents required:

a) Originals and copies of:

 Valid passport + 1)photocopy of photo page, 2) photocopy of previous visa
stamp, 3) copy of entry stamp!)
 Valid NIE + 2 copies of front and back
 Original Modelo EX00 + copy (link to EX00)
 Paid Tasa 790 052 – bring remaining 2 pages. (The bank should have kept one)
(link to TASA)
 Letter from the School certifying that you are enrolled on a suitably accredited
course
 Certificate of good performance in the first course from your current School
(certificado de aprovechamiento)
 Proof of economic means for the time of study. This requires saving at least
706€ a month coming in to your bank account. To prove so, you need to
submit the bank statements from the last 6 months. Please note, the
Extranjería Office can be strict on the correct application of this requirement
so we strongly urge you to prepare well and follow the additional specific
guidance given below in the section "Proof of Economic Means"
 Confirmation letter of medical insurance that covers what you would expect to
receive on the “Seguridad Social” for the entire period of your stay in Spain.
(Make sure your coverage exceeds the dates of studies/renewal)/ (Make sure
you provide them with a Spanish translated coverage).
 Certificate of empadronamiento (this is not usually asked for but should be
brought in case)

* Proof of Economic Means:

Spanish Bank Account
We have students who have had their renewal rejected as they have not had a Spanish bank
account and for this reason we strongly urge you to open one and to ensure that each month
you are receiving a deposit of over 706€ in this account.
In some cases renewal rejections have been overturned by students opening Spanish bank
account and showing an account balance sufficient for your period of studies (6.500€)
Bank certificate from a non-Spanish bank account
This must show a balance high enough to cover your period of studies (6.500e for visa
renewals of 12 months). You can ask for the bank certificate directly from your bank. Please
note:
- The bank certificate must be stamped by the bank and is only valid for 3 months.
- Foreign bank statements in other language (i.e. USD) are not accepted, All bank
statements / certificates must be converted into Euros.
- If the bank account is not in your name, the bank statement must be accompanied by
a notarized letter of financial support from the parent / tutor
- All documents presented (bank statements, bank certificates, notarized letter of
financial support etc.) must be presented in Spanish. If the source document is not in
Spanish, this must be translated by a sworn translator. The translation costs are
approximately 200€ - 250€. We can recommend a translator if required. Click here

and documents´ translations (legalización y traducción de documentos para la

How do I pay the Tasa 052?

790&idProvincia=28)
 Fill in the form with your information and select 1.3 under “Autorizaciones y
Documentos para Extranjeros” which states “Prórroga de la autorización de estancia
por estudios, movilidad de alumnos, prácticas no laborales o servicios de voluntariado
(titular principal y sus familiares)” . The total listed at the bottom should be 17,15
Euros but this does change.
 Fill in the security code on the bottom left corner
 Click on the icon “Obtain document/ObtenerDocumento” to print. A printable PDF file
will be created that you can then print out. Do not photocopy this document. When
you create the PDF file, it creates a special number that is tied to each Tasa form that is
created online, so you need your own special number to make sure the payment is
valid.
 The printed copy of the Tasa 052 will have 3 similar but not identical copies – one is
named for the bank, one for you, and one for Extranjería. Make sure you give the
Extranjería copy to the Extranjería, but they should know which to take.
 Take these forms to the bank (many banks have specific hours in which they accept
these types of payments, so check with the bank. If a bank refuses to let you pay, keep
trying banks until one lets you) and pay the fee of 17.15€in cash. Make sure they
stamp all three copies.

How to complete the EX00 form:

You only need to fill in boxes 1 and 3 on the first page titled DATOS DEL EXTRANJERO/A and
DOMICILIO A EFECTOS DE NOTIFICACIONES:

Make sure the address and the telephone numbers on your EX00 are correct for further
notifications. Besides, the same address must be on the EX00, certificate of empadronamiento
and certificate of enrolment from the School. This will be the address where you will receive
the letter for the 2nd appointment. Please note, it is common for this letter to not arrive so
you should be checking online to see if you are approved or not. This is explained further in
this document.

On the next page, write your name at the top and select the box “Titular de autorización
estancia por estudios, intercambio de alumnos, investigación/formación, prácticas no laborales
o voluntariado (art. 40).”

documentos correspondientes)

 By ticking this box, you consent to receive electronic notifications by email/mobile

phone. If you choose this method, please make sure you include a correct mobile
phone and/or email address.

Below this you will need to sign and date the document. For example “Madrid a 5 de enero de
2020”

The last two pages you leave blank.

What do I do when I go to the Extranjería office for submitting my application?

At the extranjeria you will need to submit your documents at the “Registro”.
Once they take your documents (they keep the copies and will return the originals after seeing
them), they will return a stamped (or they will put a sticker) copy of the EX00 to you with a
sticker with your application number. Do NOT lose the EX00 and make sure that the
stamped/stickered copy is returned to you, as you will need this for your second
appointment and to apply for “autorización de regreso” if you wish to travel outside of Spain
while your NIE is expired. This application number will also allow you to check your status
online. (To check your Status you need your NIE or application number). Click here
(https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/infoext2) for all the
different ways of checking your status. Click here for the most simple way.
Please note that it may take several months until your status appears on this website. Before
then nothing will even appear on the website, but do not worry. Your application is in process.
You should check on a weekly basis to see if you have been entered into the system.
Applications are currently taking 4-6 months.

A renewal has been granted when it says RESUELTO: FAVORABLE

Print this confirmation page when it appears.

2nd appointment:

How do they contact me for the 2nd appointment?

If your application is complete and your status changes to “Favorable” you should receive a
letter to your EX00 address with the date of your second appointment. Usually this 2nd
appointment is scheduled for a specific date between 16.00 – 18.00 hours at the “Brigada
Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras” at C/ Erica (Metro Aluche).

However, this letter often does not arrive. If you see that your status changes to Favorable, go
ahead and book the next appointment yourself. See below how.

It is compulsory to attend on the day of your appointment.

**If you don’t receive the letter, you need to check your status online as per the steps above.
(This might happen if the address you wrote in the EX00 form was not the correct one or
specific enough. In this case, you should book your own appointment. To do so click this link
(https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplustiem/citar) and book an appointment
selecting the option POLICIA-TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA) Y RENOVACIÓN DE
TARJETA DE LARGA DURACIÓN.

If they find out your application is incomplete, and they request you to provide further
documents, you will be informed either by letter or text message. In such case you will need to
go to the Extranjería’s office (Aluche) to find out what documents are missing and you will
have 10 days to complete your application submitting the missing information.
If you go online and find out your application has been denied, you can go to the extranjeria at
Avenida Plaza de Toros, 14 and ask the reason why it has been rejected. In some cases, you
can appeal providing the documentation they require.

What should I bring to the second appointment?

- Three passport-sized photos

- Ex – 17 form.
Formulario_TIE_FEB19.pdf) Fill in parts
- Tasa receipt of modelo 790 -código 012 (relates to the expedition of the new NIE card) (it
usually comes with the letter; in case it doesn’t you can take it from the police station or print
it here (https://sede.policia.gob.es/Tasa790_012/)). It currently costs18,92€ but this does
change from time to time. (Select the option “TIE que documenta la renovación de la
autorización de residencia temporal o la prórroga de la estancia o de la autorización para
trabajadores transfronterizos.”).
- Original + copy of the letter received or printed out page that says “Resuelto – Favorable”
- Original + copy of passport
- Original + copy of NIE card
- Original + copy of certificate of empadronamiento (They don´t always ask for this)
- And any additional documents requested via letter. They will take your fingerprints at the
appointment.

What happen after the second appointment?

After the second appointment, you should go back in 45 days for the card. They do not tell you
when to come back, you just go to Aluche. (“Brigada Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras” at
C/ Erica (Metro Aluche)). There is no need of a scheduled appointment. Make sure you take
with you your passport + old NIE + form EX00.
