P08: Pump control with sequence control function

Control requirements

The pumping system for a large fountain installation in a public park needs to be
replaced. This will involve the use of two pumps, one to feed the large vertical fountain
in the middle and another to handle to ring-shaped fountain around the edge. The
control system needs to ensure that the ring-shaped fountain can only operate if the
large central jet is already in operation. Plan and implement a circuit for this.

The fountain's two pumps, 1 and 2, should each be turned on by a dedicated switch and
turned off via another switch which they share in common.

Pump 1 for the central jet is turned on by Button 1.

Pump 2 for the ring is turned on by Button 2.

Pump 2 can only be switched on if Pump 1 is already operating.

When button 3 is pressed, both pumps should turn off if they are working or remain off if
they are not.

Overloading of either pump should always turn both pumps off.

Component Function
Button Both pumps OFF
Button Central pump (Pump 1) ON
Button Ring pump (Pump 2) ON
Motor protection switch Overload protection for Pump 1
Motor protection switch Overload protection for Pump 2
Contactor Power contactor for Pump 1
Contactor Power contactor for Pump 2

Planning

Develop, try out and test a control circuit using the circuit simulator. Print out the results
when you are finished.

Match the components to the names they should be identified with in this project.
Button to turn both pumps OFF ???

Button to turn central pump (Pump 1) ON ???

Button to turn ring pump (Pump 2) ON ???

Overload protection for Pump 1 ???

Overload protection for Pump 2 ???

Power contactor for Pump 1 ???

Power contactor for Pump 2 ???

 Start the simulation by clicking the button.

Procedure

Now implement the complete circuit on the experiment board and undertake a practical
test of your results.

 Place overlay 8 (SO4203-4N08) on the experiment board.

 Compare your solution with the components available for implementing

the control circuit on the experiment board.
 Check if there are any differences between your solution and the given
one and modify your circuit if necessary.
 Implement your solution as the control circuit on the experiment board.
 Also assemble a main circuit in accordance with the following circuit
diagram:
 Turn on the virtual instrument for the 3 x 14 V, 50 Hz three-phase power
supply.
 Try out the circuit as a whole.

 Turn off the three-phase power supply virtual instrument.
