LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
in
CARPENTRY 12
Subject: Carpentry
Competency: Identify Staircase Requirements from Working Drawings and Specifications
Learning Outcome: By the end of this activity, students will be able to identify and interpret staircase
requirements accurately.
Learning Objective
Understand staircase components and requirements.
Analyze and interpret working drawings and specifications for staircase details.
Materials
Working drawings of staircase (sample attached).
Pencil, ruler, and eraser.
1
A wooden staircase is composed of several key parts that work together to create a functional and aesthetically
pleasing structure. Here's a breakdown of the main components:
Step Components:
Tread: The horizontal part of a step that you step on.
Riser: The vertical part of a step between two treads.
Nosing: The overhanging edge of a tread, often rounded or profiled for a decorative touch.
Structural Components:
Stringer: The inclined structural member that supports the treads and risers. It can be open or closed,
depending on whether the ends of the treads and risers are visible or hidden.
Carriage: A horizontal beam that supports the stringers.
Railing Components:
Handrail: The horizontal rail that people can hold onto while ascending or descending the stairs.
Newel Post: A vertical post that supports the handrail at the beginning and end of a staircase or at significant
turns.
Baluster (or Spindle): Vertical members that fill the space between the handrail and the treads, providing support
and safety.
Base Rail: A horizontal rail at the bottom of the balusters.
Illustrative Example
Refer to the sample working drawing of a staircase below:
Specifications:
Total rise: 3000 mm
Total run: 4500 mm
Tread: 250 mm
Riser: 150 mm
Stair width: 1000 mm
Activity 1
Instruction/s: Based on these specifications, analyze the drawing to answer the following questions:
_________1. How many steps will the staircase have?
Calculation: Total rise ÷ Riser height
_________3. What is the total horizontal length of the staircase?
Calculation: Total run × Tread depth
Activity II: Fill-in-the-Blank Quiz
Instruction/s: Answer the following questions or complete the statements by writing the appropriate
words in the answer blanks. Choose your answer inside the box below
Riser Tread Railing Total Rise Total Run
1. The _____________________ is the vertical component of a step.
2. The _____________________ is the horizontal part of the stair step where one places their foot.
3. A staircase typically has a ____________________ on each side for safety.
4. The total height a staircase rises is known as the __________________________.
5. The ______________________ of a staircase is measured horizontally across the stairs.
Post Assessment: Multiple-Choice
