Module 7 Learning Activity

Engineering Mechanics

Name: Date:
Student No.

Problems:
Instruction: Always draw the diagram/free body diagram as part of your solution.

1. A 40 kg pole 6m long is supported by a boy 0.8m from one end and a man 2m from the
other end. At what point should a load of 80kg be placed so that the man will support
twice as much as the boy? Ans. 2.1 m from the boy

2. A 500 lb block is in contact with a 450 inclined plane. The coefficient of static friction is
0.5. Find the horizontal force necessary just to move the block up the plane.
Ans. 1500 lbs

3. A 10 lb box is suspended by a string from an overhead support. If a horizontal force of

5.8 lbs is applied to the box, what angle does the spring make with the vertical? Ans. 30
4. The rim of a 36 in. wheel on a brake – shoe testing machine has a speed of 60 miles per
hour when the brake is dropped. It comes to rest when the rim has traveled a tangential
distance of 500 ft. What is the angular acceleration in rad per sec2? Ans. 5.17

5. A projectile is launched upward from level ground at an angle of 600 with the horizontal. It
has an initial velocity of 45 m/s. How long will it take before the projectile hits the ground?
Ans. 7.94 sec

6. A man standing at a window 5 m tall watches a falling ball passes by the window in 0.3
sec. From how high above the window was the ball released? Consider the ball is initially
at rest. Ans. 11.8 m
7. In a gymnasium, a player throws a ball towards a wall 80 ft away. If he releases the ball 5
ft above the floor with an initial velocity of 55 ft/s, from the ground, determine the point at
which the ball will strike the wall if the angle of release is 45.80. Ans. 17.17 ft

8. At a uniform rate of 4 drops per second, water is dripping from a faucet. Assuming an
acceleration of each drop to be 9.81 m/s2 and no air resistance, find the distance
between two drops in mm, if the upper drop has been in motion 3/8 sec. Ans. 1226.25

9. A body weighing 40 lbs starts from rest and slides down a plane at an angle of 30 0 with
the horizontal for which the coefficient of friction is 0.3. How long will it take for the body
to move 60 ft? Ans. 3.94 s
10. A 1000 kg car is drawn vertically up a mine shaft with uniform acceleration of 8 m/s 2.
Determine the tension in the cable during this process. Ans. 17.81 kN

11. A 60 ton train is pulled up a 1% grade by a steady drawbar pull of 3.5 kN. The train
resistance is 35 N/ton and the initial speed is 10 m/s. What distance up the inclined will
the train go before its speed is 5 m/s? Ans. 521 m

12. A 50 kg box is pushed across a horizontal floor by a horizontal force of 180 N. The
coefficient of sliding friction is 0.3. Find the work done in pushing the box 20 m.
Ans. 657 J
13. A man fired at a metal target which he hanged by a single string below the branch of a
tree. The mass of the target and the bullet are 2.2 kg and 2 grams respectively. If the
target was raised 0.12m when hit by the bullet horizontally, compute for the velocity of the
bullet when it came into contact with the target in m/s? Ans. 1689

14. A cyclist on a circular track of radius 800 ft is traveling at 27 ft/s. His speed in the
tangential direction increases at the rate of 3 ft/s 2. What is the cyclist’s total acceleration
in ft/s2? Ans. 3.13

15. Traffic travels at 65 miles per hr around a banked highway curve with a radius of 3000 ft.
What banking angle is necessary such that friction will not be required to resist the
centrifugal force? Ans. 5.40
16. A mine elevator weighing 1000 kg is ascending with an acceleration of 5 m/s2. The
operator inside the elevator is weighing 60 kg. What is the tension in the cable?
Ans. 15.69 kN

17. A cannon in a level ground is aimed at 50 deg above the horizontal and a shell is fired
with a muzzle velocity of 360 m/s toward a vertical cliff 850 m away. How far above the
ground does the shell strike the side wall of the cliff?
Ans. 947 m

coefficient of friction is 0.2.
Ans. 12.26 lb
19. A stone is dropped at the top of the tower into a pool of water at the base of the tower.

how high is the tower? Ans. 107.57 m

20. A stone is dropped from a captive balloon at an elevation of 1000 m. Two seconds later,
another stone is projected vertically upward with a velocity of 248 m/s. Where will the two
stones pass each other? Ans. 842 m from the ground
