PART C

1. A man and a boy carry a weight of 300 N between them by means of

uniform pole 2 m long and weighing 100 N. Where the weight must be
placed so that the man may bear twice as much of the weight as that of
the boy?

2. A rod of length 5 metres and weight 15 N has its centre of gravity at a

distance of 2 metres from A. It rests on two parallel smooth pegs at a
distance of 3 metres apart in the same horizontal plane so that equal
portions of the rod project beyond the peg. Find the reactions at the
pegs.

3. A simply supported beam AB of span 5 m is loaded as shown in Fig. Find

the reactions at A and B.
4. A beam has hinged support at A and roller support at B as shown in Fig.
5. Two crates, each of mass 500 kg, are placed as shown in the bed of a
1500 kg pickup truck. Determine the reactions at each of the two (a) rear
wheels A, (b) front wheels B.
6. The upper beam in Figure 3 is supported at D and a roller at C which
separates the upper and lower beams. Determine the values of the
reactions at A, B, C, and D. Neglect the weight of the beams.
7. A beam ABCDE hinged at A and supported on rollers at D, is loaded as
shown in Figure. Find the reactions at A and D.
8. A motorcycle weighs 250 kg (without rider). The distance between front
and rear axle (Wheel base) is 1.83m. A rider is sitting 0.5m from front
axle. The percentage of total load (Motorcycle and rider) acting on the
rear axle is 45%. Determine the location of centre of gravity of
motorcycle from the rear axle.
9. Replace the given system of forces acting on a plate ABCD shown in
Figure by a force couple system acting at point A
10.A force couple system acting on a rectangular plate is shown in figure
below. (i) Find the equivalent force couple system at the origin O. (ii)
Find the single resultant force and its location on x - axis.
11. The vectors P and Q are two adjacent sides of a parallelogram.
Determine the area of the parallelogram when

(a) P = –8i + 4j – 4k and Q = 3i + 3j + 6k,

(b) P = 7i – 6j – 3k and Q = –3i + 6j – 2k

12. A plane contains the vectors A and B. Determine the unit vector normal
to the plane when A and B are equal to, respectively,

(a) 2i + 3j – 6k and 5i – 8j – 6k,

(b) 4i – 4j + 3k and –3i + 7j – 5k.

13. A precast concrete wall section is temporarily held by two cables as
shown. Knowing that the tension in cable BD is 900 N, determine the
moment about Point O of the force exerted by the cable at B.
14.Given the vectors P = 2i + 3j – k, Q = 5i – 4j + 3k, and S = –3i + 2j – 5k,
compute the scalar products P · Q, P · S, and Q · S.

15. Three cables are used to support a container as shown. Determine the
angle formed by cables AB and AD.
.

16.A crane weighing 3000 N supports a 6000 N force, as shown in Fig.

Determine the supporting reactions at A (pinned joint) and at B
(roller support),
17. Three children are standing on a 5 X 5-m raft. The weights of the
children at Points A, B, and C are 375 N, 260 N, and 400 N, respectively.
If a fourth child of weight 425 N climbs onto the raft, determine where
she should stand if the other children remain in the positions shown
and the line of action of the resultant of the four weights is to pass
through the center of the raft.
18. Forces 32 kN, 24 kN, 24 kN and 120 kN are concurrent at origin and are
respectively directed through the points whose coordinates are A
(2,1,6), B (4,–2,5), C (–3,–2,1) and D (5,1,–2). Determine the resultant
of the system.
19.Three forces of the same magnitude P act on a cube of side a as shown.
Replace the three forces by an equivalent wrench and determine (a) the
magnitude and direction of the resultant force R, (b) the pitch of the
wrench, (c) the axis of the wrench.
20. Replace the two couples shown with a single equivalent couple,
specifying its magnitude and the direction of its axis.
