INTRODUCTION
1. Mosquitoes transmit deadly diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika.
2. Dengue is a major health concern in the Philippines, causing millions of fatalities each year.
3. The number of dengue cases in the Philippines has increased by 191% from 2021 to 2022.
4. Children aged 5 to 9 years old are the most vulnerable to dengue in the Philippines.
5. Synthetic insecticides have drawbacks, leading researchers to explore natural alternatives like ylang-ylang flower extract.
6. Ylang-ylang oil has shown promise as a mosquito repellent and could be used in an anti-mosquito patch.
7. The patch would release ylang-ylang extract slowly, creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes.

Statement of the Problem

1. Besides the COVID-19 outbreak, dengue has been prevalent nowadays.
2. The presence of dengue in these areas poses a significant risk to the lives and well-being of
locals, especially children and other vulnerable populations.
3. For the development of innovative natural products as an alternative to chemical
repellents, studies of traditional repellent plants are a crucial resource. The risk of
mosquito-borne infections including Zika virus, chikungunya virus, and dengue virus can be
reduced by using mosquito repellents, which can be an effective way to protect against
irritating mosquito bites.
Research Questions

1. What makes the ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) flower extract

effective as an alternative kind of repellent to repel
mosquitoes?
2. How long will the ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) flower
extract be effective to repel mosquitoes?
3. What is the duration of effectiveness for the anti-mosquito
patch?
Objectives

This study aims to:

Produce an anti-mosquito patch.

Determine the duration of effectiveness to repel mosquitoes of ylang-ylang (Cananga

odorata) flower extract in a patch.

Compare the commercialized anti-mosquito patch to the experimental patch in terms

of its effectiveness in repelling mosquitoes.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The purpose of this study was to determine if Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) flower extract can be used as an effective material or
component in the production of an anti-mosquito patch. The experimental patch will be compared to the market-available commercialized
patch. During the week, researchers from 12 STEM-Garnet will construct an anti-mosquito patch in the school lab at Rizal High School in
Pasig City. However, if time is limited, the researcher may perform the testing outside of the school premises, which may limit and alter
the data findings. Due to restricted resources, the researcher cannot do any more tests than the Excito Chamber test, Repellency
Bioassay Test, and Patch Preservation Test.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The researchers aims to provide an alternative anti-mosquito patch made from Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata)
flower to lessen the number of dengue cases around the world. This study is conducted to benefit the:

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

THE CURRENT STUDY CAN BE INTERPRETED AS A FIRST STEP IN EXPLORING MORE ABOUT THE YLANG-YLANG FLOWER (CANANGA ODORATA). THE
STUDY DEMONSTRATED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A TOPICAL PATCH CONTAINING THE EXTRACT OF YLANG-YLANG IN PRODUCING AN ODOR-
MODULATING EFFECT WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THE RESEARCHERS HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE USE OF YLANG-YLANG (CANANGA ODORATA)
FLOWER EXTRACT AS A MOSQUITO PATCH BASED ON EXTENSIVE TESTS CONDUCTED. THEY HAVE FOUND AND TESTED THAT THE YLANG-YLANG
(CANANGA ODORATA) FLOWER EXTRACT, WHEN USED AS AN ANTI-MOSQUITO PATCH, EFFECTIVELY REPELS MOSQUITOES. THIS STUDY WILL ASSIST
URBAN COMMUNITIES IN COMBATING MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASES. THE CONDUCTED TESTS HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATED THE
EFFECTIVENESS OF THE YLANG-YLANG (CANANGA ODORATA) FLOWER EXTRACT, PARTICULARLY WHEN COMBINED WITH THE ORGANIC
COMPONENT, LINALOOL.
