OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

General Description
The Progard range of Deck or Fixed Firewater Monitors are designed to deliver large volume of water
(or foam) to provide control and/or extinguishment of fires.
The monitor assembly consists of a turret (waterway) with a base inlet flange. The monitor movements
are easily controlled by a handle (or worm gear hand wheels). Locking devices are provided to secure
the monitor in selected position and can be left unattended during operation. The monitor assemblies
may have been elevated from grade level to provide better area coverage.
The final flow capacity of the monitor are determined by the nozzle selected to be used with the monitor.
Most Progard nozzles are applicable for use with water and/or AFFF synthetic foam concentrates.

2.0 INSTALLATION AND STARTUP

2.1 Firewater Monitor
Ÿ Install the monitor on the rise pipe. Bolt down to secure the monitor.
Notes: Ensure that there is a block valve installed below the monitor assembly.
The monitor nozzle is NOT designed to be used as a shut off device.
2.2 Monitor Nozzle
Ÿ Install the monitor nozzle on to the discharge tip of the monitor
Ÿ Lock securely with a suitable spanner.
Notes: On self-educting type foam nozzles, the foam concentrate pickup tubing must
be hooked-up to a AFFF concentrate supply source (like a concentrate
storage tank). Ensure that a stop valve is provided on the concentrate supply
line and should remain in closed position under normal operating condition.
It is important to note that all self-executing foam nozzles have a limitation
inducing concentrate at an elevated position. Therefore the monitor nozzle
should NOT exceed 2.4 metres (8 feet) in elevation from bottom of the
concentrate level.

3.0 OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

3.1 OPERATION
Ÿ Positioning the monitor
Position the monitor nozzle in the selected direction. Vertical and horizontal rotating
movements can be executed by unlocking the locking devices (turning knobs anti clockwise)
to free the monitor.
Use the handle (lever handle or handwheel) to adjust the elevation or horizontal rotation. Once
selected, lock the the monitor to secure the position.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL

Ÿ Adjusting the Monitor Nozzle Stream Pattern

To change the stream pattern on the monitor nozzle from straight stream to full fog pattern,
simply use the handles to turn the nozzle clockwise for straight stream and

Ÿ Once the above steps are done, then Open the block valve to allow the water supply to
discharge through the nozzle.
Ÿ To conserve the concentrate, only open the concentrate shutoff valve when a steady water
stream is achieved.

SHUTDOWN

Ÿ On completing the operation, close the foam concentrate supply valve.

Ÿ Continue to run water through the monitor until clear water discharges from the monitor nozzle.
Note: In cases where foam solution is used, keep water flowing through the
nozzle to completely flush the monitor assembly of foam solution until clear
water is visible.
Ÿ Close the water supply valve.
Ÿ Replenish tank with AFFF foam concentrate. If the tank is empty, it should be inspected to
determine if cleaning is warranted before refilling.
Caution: Only foam concentrate of type listed on the tank nameplate should be used to replenish
the tank. Mixing of different types of foam concentrate could cause failure of the system.

4.0 MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Ÿ Monitor - Lubricate swivel joints at least once a month with standard bearing type grease
on zerks provided.
Ÿ Nozzle - Lubricate swivel joints at least once a month with standard bearing type grease.
