Module Name: ELEMENTARY BUSINESS MATHEMATICS

Module Code: ACT04102& FBT04103

Semester: I

Level: 4

Location: DODOMA

Contact Hours per Week: Lecture 2hrs & Tutorials 2hrs

2. Module Description
Elementary Business Mathematics introduces students to apply mathematical concepts and
methods that help in decision making. The use of mathematical tools has been on the increase
day to day in business and IT in solving business problems. Therefore Business mathematics
is a Fundamental course in all business related disciplines.

3. Aims, Objectives and Learning Context


3.1 Course Aims
Elementary Business Mathematics will enhance the ability of students to use mathematical
concepts and statistical techniques to solve business and apply them basing on a given context.
At the end of the course, students should be in a position to apply Mathematical concepts and
Methods to promote business growth and apply statistical skills, techniques and methods in
sustaining business operations and decisions making.

3.2 Learning Objectives

i. Apply set theory in solving business problems


ii. Apply arithmetic skill to solve basic business problems
iii. Use basic concepts of equations and inequalities in solving business related problems

iv. Apply matrices knowledge to solve basic business problems
v. Apply simple and compound interests Skills to solve routine business problems
vi. Apply basic rules of differentiation to solve the basic problem of optimization in the
business
vii. Apply statistical concepts to solve basic organization problems

3.3 Learning Context and Graduate Attributes

The module will employ a variety of methods (formal lectures, group & Individual presentations,
,Individual studies, Assignments and problem-solving exercises) as appropriate.

4. Course contents

i. Set Theory: Definitions and types of set, Methods of describing set, operations on set,
vein diagram and application of set theory.
ii. Simple Arithmetic: Concepts of numbers, decimals, percentages to decimals,
percentage formula to find rate, the portion or base, proportional and variation.
iii. Equations and Inequalities: Solution of simple linear equations, simultaneous equation
system, solution of simultaneous equation systems with specific applications to business
problems, inequalities.
iv. Matrix: Definition, Matrix operations, Determinant and inverse of matrix.
v. Sequence and series: Arithmetic and Geometric Progression, Simple and Compound
Interest
vi. Basic concepts of Calculus: Differentiation and Integration, Applications (Marginal cost
and Revenue).
vii. Simple Descriptive Statistics: Definition, Types of Statistics, Frequency and Measure of
Tendency (Mean, Mode and Median) and Measure of dispersion (Range, Variance and
Standard deviation).
