Revelation: Lesson 3

The Exalted Christ

Revealed
Revelation 1

Lesson 3 Questions
First Day: Read Lesson 2 Notes.
The notes and lecture fortify the truth of the passage for understanding and application to
daily life.
1. What points from the lecture did you find helpful as you begin your study of Revelation?

2. How did the notes ease your concerns or create anticipation regarding the study of
Revelation?

Second Day: Read Revelation 1:1-3.

Revelation opens with its purpose, subject, author, and associated blessings.
Revelation 1:1-3
Prologue
1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must
soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who testifies
to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed
is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it
and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
3. a. Who is revealed in the book of Revelation?
Revelation shows us a picture of Jesus, not only as the slain-yet-living Lamb, but also
as our Shepherd who will protect and provide for us into eternity.

b. Who gave this revelation to John? Why was it given, and what results were promised?
In Revelation it is God who gives the revelation to Jesus Christ. Jesus sent his angel to
his servant John, who was in exile on the island of Patmos. It was given to John so that
John becomes his prophet to the church. John is to write down what he has seen, what
is, and what is to come.
Everyone who reads aloud the words of this prophecy will be blessed, and those who
hear it and take to heart what is written in it will also be blessed.

4. What does “blessed” mean? In what ways do you anticipate God’s blessing through
studying Revelation?

Blessed refers to those receiving God's favor, regardless of the circumstances.
Scripture shows that blessing is anything God gives that makes us fully satisfied in
him. Anything that draws us closer to Jesus.

5. What does it mean to “take to heart” what is written? How might you apply this
personally?
The dictionary meaning of the phrase “take to heart” is to think seriously about
something. So, I think it means after reading the book of revelation, the ones who take
notice of warning and signs in the scripture seriously and prepare themselves and
anticipate the second coming of Christ like the 5 brides who filled their lamps with oil or
fill themselves with Holy Spirit or live according to God’s will are the one are going to be
blessed.

Third Day: Read Revelation 1:4-8.

John greeted his recipients, the seven churches in Asia.
Revelation 1:4-8
Greetings and Doxology
4 John,
To the seven churches in the province of Asia:
Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the
seven spirits[a] before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the
firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a
kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and
ever! Amen.
7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,”[b]
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;
and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”[c]
So shall it be! Amen.
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to
come, the Almighty.

6. What do you learn about God from 1:4-5a? How do these truths relate to the authority
and dependability of God’s Word?
God is eternal he creates the universe in the beginning, living in us now and will give
judgements to the sinners and will reward the believers at the end times. Seven Spirits,
which are before the throne of God are
1. the Spirit of the Lord,
2. the Spirits of wisdom,
3. the Spirits of understanding,
4. the Spirits of counsel,
5. the Spirits of might,
6. the Spirits of knowledge and
7. the Spirits of fear of the LORD

7. How do the following passages relate to truths about Jesus revealed in 1:5b-6?

Lesson 3
Revelation 1:5b-6? (Jesus is the only son of God who was sent by God to lay down his life
on the cross. He was sent to save us from the penalty of our sin with his blood. Jesus
obeyed God’s command because he loves us with unconditional love. He is the firstborn
from the dead and first fruit of those who fallen asleep. Jesus is the ruler of the kings of
the earth. He made the heaven for us to serve his God, and father. Whoever believes in
him shall not perish but have eternal life. God exalted him to the highest place because
of his obedience. God gave Jesus the name that is above every name, that at the name of
Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every
tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord)

the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be
a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever
and ever! Amen.

John 3:16-17
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his
Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

1 Corinthians 15:3
3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our
sins according to the Scriptures,

1 Corinthians 15:20
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have
fallen asleep.

Philippians 2:9-11
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God, the Father.

8. How might the truths in 1:5b-6 help if you feel God is angry, frustrated, or disappointed in
you?

9. a. In addition to Revelation 1:4-8, read Isaiah 53:5, 10; Zechariah 12:10; Matthew 24:30;
and
Colossians 2:13-14, and consider the return of the Lord Jesus. Who will witness Jesus’s
return?
All the people of the earth.
Isaiah 53:5
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

Isaiah 53:10
10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes[a] his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,

and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

Zechariah 12:10
Mourning for the One They Pierced
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a
spirit[a] of grace and supplication. They will look on[b] me, the one they have pierced,
and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for
him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

Matthew 24:30
30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of
the earth[a] will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of
heaven, with power and great glory.
Colossians 2:13-14
13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God
made you[a] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the
charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has
taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

Who are “those who pierced him”? Who are those who “will mourn,” and why will they
mourn?
Israelis are those who pierced him and will morn because they have rejected Jesus
when Jesus came to earth the first time and they crucified him on the cross.

b. How do these truths strengthen and comfort you while anticipating Jesus’s return?
All the prophecies related to Jesus first coming to earth have been fulfilled and the
prophecy about his second coming will also be fulfilled. All I have to do is to study the
bible and teach myself how to live and react to the events that are ahead of us in the
future.

Fourth Day: Read Revelation 1:9-16.

John began to describe his heavenly vision.
Revelation 1:9-16
John’s Vision of Christ
9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance
that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the
testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud
voice like a trumpet, 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the
seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and
Laodicea.”
12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw
seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man,
[a] dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14
The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing
fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of
rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a
sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
10.a. Where was John, and why was he suffering?
John was on the island of Patmos, an Aegean island off the coast of Roman Asia.
He was exiled as a result of anti-Christian persecution under the Roman
emperor Domitian. He was about 95 years old at the time he was on the island
and he had to cut out the marbles as all the other prisoners.

Lesson 3
b. From your knowledge of the Bible, history, or present-day circumstances, describe
some of the persecution and hardships suffered by those who believe in Jesus Christ.
Some of the persecution and hardships suffered by those who believe in Jesus Christ
are
1. restrictions,
2. pressure,
3. discrimination,
4. opposition,
5. disinformation,
6. injustice,
7. intimidation,
8. mistreatment,
9. marginalization,
10.oppression,
11.intolerance,
12.infringement, (the action of breaking the terms of a law, agreement, etc.;
violation)
13.violation,
14.ostracism, (exclusion from a society or group)
15.hostilities,
16.harassment,
17.abuse,
18.violence,
19.ethnic cleansing and genocide
20.confiscation or destruction of property,
21.incitement (urging someone to behave unlawfully) of hatred,
22.arrests,
23.imprisonment,
24.beatings,
25.torture,
26.murder, and
27.executions

c. How can you encourage those who face persecution or hardship because of their faith
in Christ?
Matthew 5:10-12
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of
evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward
in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

11.What stands out to you in John’s description of what he saw and heard?

12.From 1:12-16, who is the “son of man,” and what do you learn about Him? (See also
Daniel 7:13 and Matthew 9:4-6; 24:30; 26:64.)
Jeus is powerful but merciful and yet he has a great glory and he Is sitting on the
right hand of the almighty God.
Revelation 1:12-16 (powerful)
12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw
seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of
man,[a] dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his

chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were
like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like
the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of
his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its
brilliance.

Daniel 7:13 (glorified)

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,
[a] coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was
led into his presence.

Matthew 9:4-6 (merciful)

4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your
hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and
walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to
forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go
home.”

Matthew 24:30 (powerful and has great glory)

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples
of the earth[a] will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of
heaven, with power and great glory.
Matthew 26:64 (sitting on the right hand of God)
64 “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will
see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the
clouds of heaven.”

Fifth Day: Read Revelation 1:17-20.

John began to record God’s heavenly message for His people.
Revelation 1:17-20
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me
and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead,
and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. 20
The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden
lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels[a] of the seven churches, and the seven
lampstands are the seven churches.

13.How did John respond to his vision of Christ in His glory? Why is a proper understanding of
God’s majesty and our position before Him important?
John fell at Jesus’s feet as though he was dead. God is holy and powerful being and
we sometime treat him like a friend or a genie who will make all our wishes come
true. Though God has given us the privilege to call ourselves as the children of
God, we must aware of his holiness and power. We must respect and fear the Lord
God.

14.a. What words and claims in 1:17b-18 did Jesus offer to comfort and strengthen John?
and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was
dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and
Hades.

Lesson 3
b. What instructions did Jesus give to John in 1:19?
19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place
later.

c. In 1:20, how did Jesus explain some of the symbolism within John’s vision?
20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the
seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels[a] of the seven
churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches

Sixth Day: Review Revelation 1.

The exalted Christ is worthy of worship.
15. What truth from Revelation 1 will you pray to make a part of your life this week?
God is the Almighty, who is, who was, and who is to come. He controls everything in the
past, present and the future. So, I will pay close attention to what he is saying about the
future as I want to live according to God’s will and be a part of new Jerusalem who are
saved by the blood of Jesus.
