A rare mouse-deer-one of the smallest hoofed animals in the world-has been born at a
Hampshire Zoo. The Javan chevrotain was born weighing 370 g (13oz) at Marwell Zoo near
Winchester, which is currently closed to the public due to the pandemic. Keepers said the
youngster was born to parents Gus and Gwen in the zoo's tropical house and was "doing well".
Tim Rowlands, from the zoo, said, "All deer species will hide their young until they are older, so
they will only really come out to feed then hide again."
"There are very few zoos who care for any of the mouse-deer species as they are so small
in size, very secretive, and nocturnal, so any youngster born is great news for the conservation
breeding program.”
It's not known exactly how many of the animals live in the wild on the Indonesian island
of Java. When born, the young are the size of a rat and can run and jump soon after birth. The
young suckle only occasionally, and only at night. Marwell Zoo, which is home to more than 140
species, is currently closed to the public because of lockdown restrictions.

An asteroid similar in size to the Golden Gate Bridge will whip past Earth later this
month-the largest and fastest asteroid to pass close to our planet this year. But don't worry, it
won't get too close.
The asteroid, officially known by NASA as 231937 (2001 FO32), is about 1,300 to 2,230
feet wide, according to observations made by the NEOWISE team, putting it at the smaller end
of the scale. It has an orbit period of 810 days.
The asteroid is smaller than the last notable one to make a close approach to Earth, but it
will be three times closer, NASA said in a statement Thursday. 2001 F032 is set to come within
1.25 million miles of Earth at 11:02 AM. ET on March 21, just one day after the spring equinox.
That's close enough for NASA to classify it as "potentially hazardous" in its database of near-
Earth asteroids, a designation is given when they come within about 4.65 million miles of Earth
and are larger than 500 feet in diameter. This diagram depicts the elongated and inclined orbit of
2001 F032 as it travels around the Sun (white ellipse). Because of this orbit, when the asteroid
makes its close approach to Earth, it will be traveling at an unusually fast speed of 77,000 mph.
It will zoom past at almost 77,000 miles per hour, or 21 miles per second-peaking scientists’
interests as one of the fastest space rocks known to fly past Earth. The asteroid is "unusually
speedy" due to its highly inclined and elongated orbit around the Sun, which makes it closer to
the Sun than Mercury and twice as far from the Sun as Mars.
"This is the closest predicted approach in 2021 for any moderately large asteroid, where
'moderately large' means at least several hundred meters in size.” Paul Chodas, the Director of
the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, told CBS News.
However, it poses no risk of impact, and scientists know its path very accurately, having
studied it for about two decades. "As 2001 FO32 makes its inner solar system journey, the
asteroid picks up speed like a skateboarder rolling down a halfpipe, and then slows after being
flung back out into deep space and swinging back toward the Sun,” NASA said.

Seeing a beloved substitute teacher living in his car inspired a former student to step up
and help a man who had made a difference in his life. The help came in the form of a cheque for
SUS27,000 ($34,000), money that former student Steven Nava helped raise through a
GoFundMe campaign last week in the USA.
It was money that the former substitute teacher, Jose Villarruel from Fontana, California,
said he never expected. "From the bottom of my heart, I just had to resort to all of my self-
control not to become sentimental about the whole thing and not to become nervous," Mr.
Villarruel told CNN. "It was extremely exciting, totally unexpected, and great. Mr. V, as his
students call him, turned 77 on March 11.
Mr. Villarruel has lived in his car for the past eight years, all while working as a
substitute teacher for Los Angeles Unified School District. When the pandemic started and
classes went to remote learning, the need for substitute teaches went away, he said. Mr.
Villarruel applied to get his retirement funds so he could have some income. He made the
decision years ago to live in his car because he was sending most of his income to his wife,
children, and extended family in Mexico, he said.
Early this month, Mr. Nava was getting ready for his job as a welder and heading to work
around 5 AM. He noticed a man in the parking lot of the nearby senior center going through the
trunk of his car. Mr. Nava said he thought it was strange and he kept glancing at the man,
thinking he looked familiar. "Throughout the day, I was just thinking, “Wait wait, wait, I think
that's my substitute teacher,” he said, eventually realizing it was Mr. V, who taught him at
Fontana High School. Mr. Nava said he had always remembered Mr. Villarruel. "He really stuck
to me just because of the way he was so nice around his students. He'd ask how your day would
go, did you eat, just small little details like that." "He'd be really, really funny when he took
attendance."
It took him a few days to work up the courage, but Mr. Nava returned to the parking lot
and found Mr. Villarruel again. He asked him about his day and what his situation was, he said.
When Mr. Nava learned how Mr. Villarruel had been living, he insisted on giving his former
teacher the money he had on him, which happened to be $US300 ($380).
"He gave me this big old smile and said, "Thank you so much," Mr. Nava said.
"He came over to give me a hug and as he was hugging me, I saw a little tear run down his face."
It was then that Nava told him, "I'm going to get you out of this situation, one way or another.
I'm going to find a way," he said.
That day, Mr. Nava created the GoFundMe campaign for Mr. V, which earned thousands
of dollars in a matter of hours, he said. The next day, a TikTok video he made about Mr.
Villarruel, which has now been viewed 1.7 million times, helped bring the donations up to
$US27,000 ($34,800). "Teachers play a huge part in our lives," Mr. Nava said. "I felt like I
needed to repay the favor."

What might be Asia's longest-missing bird just came out of hiding. For the first time in
170 years, a black-browed babbler has been found in Indonesia, researchers reported last week.
The discovery of the muted black, gray, and chestnut-brown bird solves what an authoritative
birding guide describes as "one of the great enigmas of Indonesian ornithology".
"When we actually got confirmation of the identification, I did a little prayer and bowed
down to celebrate," said Panji Gusti Akbar, an ornithologist and lead author of the paper
describing the new species. "I felt excitement, disbelief, and a lot of happiness."
Ornithologists first described black-browed babblers around 1850 after the collection of
the only known specimen of the species. The specimen was at first mislabeled as having come
from the island of Java rather than Borneo, stymieing early attempts to locate additional black-
browed babblers. But even after ornithologists cleared up the geographic mix-up, no one
managed to find the bird. It has not helped that, traditionally, few birders and ornithologists have
ventured to the Indonesian side of Borneo.
In 2016, that began to change with the founding of BW Galeatus, a bird-watching group
in Indonesian Borneo. BW Galeatus members have reached out to local people to teach them
about the avian diversity in their provinces. Two of those local men, Muhammad Suranto and
Muhammad Rizky Fauzan, were curious about the identity of a black-and-brown bird they
sometimes saw flitting around during their trips into the forest in South Kalimantan, one of
Indonesia's provinces on Borneo. In October, Mr. Suranto and Mr. Fauzan managed to catch one
of the birds and text photos to Joko Said Trisiyanto, a member of BW Galeatus.
