Department of Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering
Second Semester, 2024
Note: This syllabus is subject to change at any 4me based on the class's needs and the instructor's
discre4on. If changes are made to the syllabus, an updated version will be communicated to the
students.
Module Purpose: The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the science of fluid
mechanics. Students will gain an understanding of the mechanisms of fluid flow.
Overarching Learning Outcome: Students should be able to describe the properTes of fluids and
analyse pressure, velocity, fricTon, and losses in hydraulic systems.
Specific Learning Outcome: On compleTng the module students should be able to:
1. Describe properTes of fluids and condiTons for relaTve equilibrium in fluid
2. Categorise one-dimensional mass and momentum conservaTon and applicaTon of
conTnuity equaTon and the Bernoulli’s equaTon.
3. Demonstrate skills for flow measurements in laboratory demonstraTons.
4. Solve general hydraulic systems with respect to energy changes (pressure, velocity), pipe
fricTon, and local hydraulic losses.
