Task Based Learning ( TBL )

Tasks are activities which have meaning as their primary focus. Success in tasks
is evaluated in terms of achievement of an outcome, and tasks generally bear
some resemblance to real-life language use. So task-based instruction takes a
fairly strong view of communicative language teaching. (Skehan 1996b: 20)

Tasks are believed to foster processes of negotiation, modification, rephrasing, and

experimentation that are at the heart of second language learning. This view is part
of a more general focus on the critical impor- tance of conversation in language
acquisition (e.g., Sato 1988).

Task is "an activity which requires learners to arrive at an outcome from given
information through some process of thought, and which allows teachers to control
and regulate that process" (Prabhu 1987: 17)

Task as "a piece of work or an activity, usually with a specified objective, under-
taken as part of an educational course, at work, or used to elicit data for research"
(Crookes 1986: 1).

The communicative task [is] a piece of classroom work which involves learners in
comprehending, manipulating, producing or interacting in the target lan- guage
while their attention is principally focused on meaning rather than form. The task
should also have a sense of completeness, being able to stand alone as a
communicative act in its own right. Nunan (1989: 10)

My concept:

A task is an activity to evaluate previously acquired knowledge and how the

student, based on his own abilities, solves the activity in order to have meaningful
learning.
Why is task important to include in a planning?

Because the tasks help the student in learning languages, the meaningful tasks
promote their learning and involve them in solving problems with a clear objective.

What is the purpose of a task?

Its purpose is for the student to adopt skills to solve the tasks and in that process
look for more information in order to achieve a result.

What task types have you been exposed to?

Throughout my years as a student, I have done tasks in pairs, in teams, as well as

questions, letters, e-mails, sketches, summaries, diagrams, videos, among others.
Each one helped me to improve my teaching.

In summary, the tasks are of great importance in the educational process of a

student. The fact that a student performs tasks involves him using his thinking,
reasoning, understanding and her abilities, to carry out the objective of the activity.
They also help the student to put learning into practice in their daily lives so that all
the information acquired has more meaning than just doing a task and thus the
student has had a real understanding of learning.
