 Why publish another scale book?

For students:

Many scale books are cluttered with bowing patterns written over the scales, or have
different scale variations mixed in. I think this makes it hard to see and understand the
actual scale. I am hoping you will find this book to be easier to read and follow.

There are different ways of marking extensions. Don’t be distressed if these are
different from what you have seen!

I would suggest putting a tag or marker at the beginning of the minor scale section to
make it easier to find (and the 3 octave section, if desired).

Large print edition: several people asked me for this. I hope you find it helpful!

For teachers:

I couldn’t find a scale book that I liked for my students, so I decided to make my own. If you are interested in a
version of this book without fingerings, let me know and I’ll create one.

Many books are in circle of fifths order, which I find less practical. When students are working on F major, you
must hunt for it way in the back. This book is organized more in the order that students will learn scales. Also,
there aren’t enough books with one octave scales, and students get confused if they are supposed to stop in the
middle and pick it back up near the end.

By having the arpeggios on the same page as the scales, you can talk about the structure of chords as they relate
to scales.

This book is meant to be easier to read and follow by omitting the theory and patterns such as broken thirds
often found in scale books. My goal was simplicity, clarity, and completeness. I included the circle of fifths so
that students can check off the scales as they learn them.

 Minor Scales
There are three usual ways of playing/writing minor scales. Here are all
three types, shown in A minor.

Melodic Minor Scale

This book uses the melodic minor scale. It is the only common scale
that is different ascending and descending.

Natural Minor
The natural minor scale looks its name:
no accidentals (sharps or flats) are used.

Harmonic Minor
The harmonic minor scale has an Eastern Europe/Middle East sound.

 Some Suggestions for Getting Yourself to Play Scales:

1. Play just one scale, one key, when you warm up each day. This feels less
boring than “I’m going to work on scales now.”

2. Use bowing patterns to keep things interesting. Use the suggested ones in
the book, or make up your own, or find patterns in pieces you are working
on.

3. Practice a style or bowing technique: very legato, staccato on the string,

spiccato, etc. Why not practice smooth bow changes and other bowing
challenges on a scale, so you can have that skill ready when you need it in
harder music? Or try this one slowly: full bow, fortissimo, heavily accented
notes.

4. Play the scale of the key of the piece you are working on. And the
arpeggio. Use them as a warmup before you practice the piece.

5. Make the scale musical by playing a crescendo on the way up and

decrescendo on the way down. Or do the opposite. Play a scale fortissimo,
or pianissimo.

6. Think about each note as you play the scale: can you make the tone and
articulation even across the notes? This requires very close attention.

7. My typical warmup: pick a scale and a bowing style/pattern. Use a

metronome. Play the scale very slowly at first, speeding up to as fast as
you can with that bowing.

8. Play every scale as if it were music, meaning make it as beautiful as

possible. It can change your attitude while playing the scale. Ideally, one
should never play anything without thinking about making the best sound.
We should never stop making music to play just notes. Making scales
musical will help make everything you play musical.
