Classifying Matter Using Particle Models 2

All matter contains atoms. In some matter, atoms are joined together by chemical bonds to
form molecules. Both atoms and molecules are kinds of particles.
Matter can be classified as a pure substance or a mixture:
• A pure substance is made up of one type of particle.
• A mixture is made up of two or more different types of particles.

To help us classify A B C
matter, we use particle
models like the ones
shown to the right.
Models help us imagine
what particles of matter,
such as atoms and
molecules, look like.

Use the definitions and models to answer the questions below.

1. Circle the models that represent pure substances.

A B C D E F

2. Circle the models that represent mixtures.

A B C D E F

3. Compare the pure substance models. Identify one similarity and one difference among them.

4. Can a mixture be made of both compounds and elements? Support your answer with details
from the models.
